This question has come up several times as what constitutes a long block? Guess you first have to ask what is included on a short block.

lnteresting though because l have asked and emailed several people involved in and around the engine building business with only one response.

So post up your knowledge, feelings,or opinions.Be interesting to see what comes up.

Short block - cases, crank, cylinder, pistols. Optional - head, flywheel cover, intake mani.

I consider a long block a bolt in and go step up. Optional - no pipe

In the car world a shortblock is just the bottom end (crank, pistons, cases) while a longblock includes the head. IMO the same terminology should be applied here however that will never catch on considering people still call the engine a 'motor'

Short block- cases crank bed plates cylinder pistons head

long block - short block plus stator bendix flywheel flywheel cover intake reeds carb fa ebox exhaust,

unless other wise stated what's included, when I buy motors and I get long block I still ask what's included like u said, everyone's different.

its an automotive term. short block is just the block, pistons rods and crank. long block includes heads. my memory for useless automotive info is going away. i get calls all the time for running jetski motors. when i say short block, i mean no intake, exhaust or electronics. no matter what you or anybody else calls anything, you still have to make it crystal clear what is and isnt included. if you're using a term to describe multiple parts, there is always going to be confusion.

That may be the answer.

long block includes head but no intake or carb or ex mani. short block is cylinders crank pistons and cases . RTR is everything except your exhaust mani in my book
