I'm looking at setting up my b1 for surf. It currently is a 61x stock with a factory wet pipe. I just went though every piece and cleaned up and painted the ski. I have the motor in pieces and am going to have friend with a machine shop bore it. My questions are:
What size should I bore it out to?
Should I have the head milled or get an Ada head to run pump gas?
Is it worth bumping the 44mm carb to a 46? What jetting?
Is a carterb rocker worth it?
Thanks

Bore it to the max bore. If you are going for big air I would get some RHAAS motor mounts and run a girdled head. 44mm carb will be fine. You might also look into the Rear transom piece by 701 industries or make your own. Also look into tubbies.

My setup is a basic re-bore (0.5mm over) to cleanup the cylinder, Riva Racing Girdled head, Riva Single 44mm Intake and 44mm carb on 62T cases with a 61X Cylinder and Riva Red Pipe. Honestly, unless you are wanting to go crazy the 701 bore is fine for surf. Minimizing the bore gives you more room to re-bore later on. There are plenty of guys running close to stock blasters in the surf, and then there are those going crazy on power. Ultimate, I guess it just depends on how far you want to go.

As for other Mods, I run the 701 Industries Surf Rocker which helps keep the nose up on the face of the wave and does it for a very reasonable price. I also run the 701 Industries transom plate, surf wedge, surf plugs and rear exhaust. The plate keeps the transom from cracking on those vertical landings, the wedge keeps the water pressure on landing from damaging the bond rail, the surf plugs lets the water in the hull evacuate while riding, and the exhaust just looks bad ass and in theory helps prevent cavitation from the air introduced around the pump. While you are at it, the 701 Surf Straps are a nice edition as well as their suspension steering. Mounts are a must for surf riding. RHAAS and 701 industries both have some great mounts and Robin and 701Dave are both good people and great for the sport.
