Wake jumping is illegal (either too close to another craft or reckless operation) but I've never heard of wave jumping being illegal.

Why would jumping a wake be considered reckless operation, and not a wave?

That's the BS I've been given in CA.

In Va Beach we're supposed to be 100' or 50yds or something offshore, away from objects, away from surfers, and away from each other :bs2: . So yes, jumping waves is illegal here fwiw.

wave jumping is far from illegal and can't be stopped... the zone I ride in has specifc rules for riding and jumping waves is not prohibited... If I'm out the mouth of the inlet, no one can say anything about what I do... The coast Guard can't even tell us to stay out of huge surf... they have to let us go out... I've been over this w/ them a few times... they just will not go out to rescue you... simple as that...

I wouldn't go as far as to say all that...... while the premiss of your vessle leaving the water could be debated night & day whether it's legal or not, safe, etc.... you'll get a different answer from every water cop you ask. But there are laws for how close to shore and objects you can do this. Most states have a 100-300 ft law stating you cannot operate a powered craft within these limits and beaching/launching is usually a no no too. Now whether they care to enforce this is not a factor, but the law is there. With exception to Daytona where they have zones where this is allowed assuming you follow the other rules they have in place. Jet out of one of them fancy zones and see how legal you are.... (Spoiled bastids... oh how I envy you :disappointed: )

I think Nick is correct.

Wavedemon and I went out when there was a hurricane just off tampa bay. Realistically, we had no business even being our there. It was 6-8' windchop, raining, windy w/tons of debris in the water. As we were putting in a park ranger showed up and said
" I cannot legally tell you not to go out. I can only strongly recommend that you do not launch. If you get into trouble there will be no-one to rescue you. By the way, the harbor pilot almost sank about 20 minutes ago. Have fun!" and he drove off.

I wasn't questioning it being illegal to go out when conditions are severe. i.e. small craft advisories... I agree that is up to you and at your own risk. I'm talking about riding close to shore/wave jumping within whatever amount of feet/yards the law says you can be to land. :cool2:

near impossible to say wave jumping is illegal, nearly every boat samller than a freighter, . comes out of the water at times in waves to an extentand i imagine they can as well .
where could the line be drawn on that, any object moving forward given the right wave is going to leave the water period, the legal description of jumping would have to be way to specific to make into any enforcable law

i bet some where they are woking on laws about inverted jumping though, and trying to make that a reckless op situation

wake jumping can be illegal and that law make all the sense inthe world to me as a boat owner... there is nothing i hate more than some newb on a sea doo trying to jump my prop wash or other riders when our clan is out that see no sense in following any type of order when trying to catch air off any wakes. that is dangerous business and i am sure the day will come in our area when someone will get hurt badly trying to get pole position

the best part of that day was the guy we meet up with there. he just got his ski and we're pretty sure he didn't know how to swim. he was horrified of falling off his ski. but he stuck it out and rode those awefull conditions. For some reason he's never hooked up with us again though...
