300/440/550 Water in fuel??

Hey guys, my buddy has a 88 550 and keeps well be riding around for a bit and when he gets about 1/4 left in his tank the water seperator starts filling up with water, its constant and we always end up dumping the end of the tank because there is so much water. Im really confused on this one we put in all new lines new seals on the top of the tank, a new fuel cover and made sure the filler next was tight. Any other ideas? The only thing i can think of is the vent in line runs up the handle pole, could it be when he falls water gets into the line and eventually falls into the tank???
Hopefully you guys have some suggestions

Alex

Check your gas cap and fuel filler neck. On my old 550 the gas cap was cracked at the base of the threads and the plastic filler neck was cracked at the base of the threads where it comes through the hull. My cracks were small and hard to find, but they were enough to do the same thing you are describing. After replacing my cap and filler neck my problems went away.

It's a good idea to check your vent line too. Make sure the end is in a good spot where it won't take on too much water.

I had the same problem with my SXR recently. If you take the vent line out, what do you do with it? Run it into the engine compartment, or cut it off and fughedaboutit?

OK....I just removed the tube going up the handlepole and took off the hose right at the valve junction. The tube now is only about 5 inches long, and it's inside the engine compartment in a good spot so it doesn't ingest any water. Should be good to go. My ski is running awesome now, BTW...Tom21 fixed it the otehr day, and I can't wait to hit the water this weekend.
