You can definitely use polyester resin on the fx1, but you get what you pay for. Epoxy resin has a better secondary bonding strength than polyester. Plus polyester resin fumes are terrible compared to epoxy

Polyester as mentioned would not be the ideal choice for a repair, especially if it has been sitting on the shelf. Vinylester would be a better choice and it has very good secondary bonding characteristics.

I use vinylester for polyester and vinylester repairs, and epoxy for smc repairs. Plus epoxy has a very long shelf life compared to other resins.

I've had good luck with poly, vinyl, and epoxy on the FX......never a problem with any of them. However, if you have a serious bonding stress situation, give yourself every advantage and use epoxy. If you are doing some basic mods that aren't under large bonding stress, use whatever you want.

Back to this subject. Im laying up my tray using a combo of 1208 biax and 8.9 oz E glass. Whats left on the gunwhales and the tray is 1208 layed up with epoxy resin. Can I use vinyl ester resin? I know its not as strong but it is kinda close in strength. And its 45 for a gallon kit of vinyl ester and 70 for a gallon kit of fast epoxy. What are your guys thoughts?

I agree with all the previous comments. its all good advice. In the end I would just suck it up and get the epoxy. its not like you wont find a use for it somewhere, sometime.

epoxy-its the multipurpose tool. make parts with vinyl and bond with epoxy.

@tomski

Since you used epoxy for the previous work you should just use epoxy again. You could also use vinylester to make the tray and then bond with epoxy.
