Using an Infrared Thermometer: What Temps for Engine, Exhaust...

If I used an infrared thermometer to measure the tempurature of various parts of the ski, like the expansion chamber, front and rear of the cylinders, etc. does anybody have any expected numbers, or safe ranges to stay in while tuning the ski?

Does 120-130F for the water temp at bypass fittings apply to cylinder wall temp?

one time, a customer walked into steves shop with a couch, service manual and an infrared thermometer. he was frustrated because he was trying to figure out what temerature the water should come out of the pisser and was hell bent on achieving a specific temperature that not even he knew.

he ran it on the flush kit and was convinced that the problem with his ski was related to the temperature of the pisser water (on a flush kit, nevertheless). he kept on referring to the manual and searching for something.

he was getting irrate because steve and i were just kind of laughing at the dude because he was completely befuddled.

i looked at the thermometer and said "lemme see that thing"..... i checked my own temperature and it said 84 degrees.

we laughed some more.

the guy left.

he couldnt even say what the ski was doing wrong. but then he was completely dumbfounded when he saw my temp was 84. i told him that if that thing is accurate, ive gotbigger problems than he does. he then started checking the temp of everything in sight in disbelief that his new toy was a POS.

thats my experience with infrared thermometers and skis.

You can't read the temp of the motor you would be reading the temp of the water jacket. Everybody runs there motors different but I heard that you want the pisser water off of the head to be ~130. To me that is pretty hot. I run my ski at about 100 at the most and have never had a problem.

I have an infrared thermometer also and it reads your tempature if you shoot it in your mouth about mid eightys but that is bacause the air is cooling the surface temp of your tougue. But mine reads pretty close to my meat thermomether when using the barbeque grill.

You guys beat me too it. Most infrared temp sensors are inaccurate. And on a shiny B-pipe they are extremely inaccurate and will read too hot. If you get an accurate one, to get true readings on a shiny surface you have to blacken it with a sharpy.
