I got my 650 SJ motor back and its got an inline fuse in the electrical box, behind the cap you unscrew.

My 650/701 conversion doesnt have this inlinfe fuse in it, unless its accidentally tucked into the electrical box somewhere else.

Im assuming I need this, correct?

Keep it, definitely. i just had one blow two weeks ago, and God knows what would have happened to my CDI if it had not.

My understanding is it's mainly there to stop the CDI from blowing if the cables to the battery are crossed, which definitely did not happen in my case.

It should be there but it is not necessary, it is only there in case you hook the battery up backwards. Use it if you got it one of my squares had a scotch lock connector I just discovered no too long ago and it ran fine all summer.

That definitely DID happen to me.

Ross gave me a battery with terminals oposite mine, I didn't pay attention when I was hooking it up and it blew the fuse. Of course I didn't have a fuse on me, so I bypassed it. Not a good idea....but I'd rather ride than go find a new fuse.

Guys, that fuse protects the entire ski's electrical system. That includes the wiring going to the start/stop buttons too. I'd rather pop a fuse than catch my wiring on fire.
