Trouble with RRP foot hold install ( troubled no more )

Well here we go . I 'll try to keep it short and sweet . I was asked to post this by Brian to see if others had the same problem with this kit.

There is no way to install the holds according to the instructions . The boxes that bond to the inside of the gunwales are not deep enough . By my measurements they are about 1/2 inch to shallow. IMO that is way to much to shim. A proper bond / alignment MUST be made from the box to the inside of the gunwale for structural support .

The 4 pic is how they should fit , but even with the gunwale trimmed back as far as I have trimmed it . The boxes are to shallow. it should be noted that the instructions do not advise cutting as much of the rear gunwale away as I have. The xfts were already cut that much so I worked with what I had .

It's very workable I'm just disappointed in the lack of accuracy with the box dimissiosnins . This would be a one or two day install ( for a guy with out a , wife , kids , job , and a religious affiliation on sundays , but will turn in to much more . I expect more from RRP . They build top shelf components , but missed the mark on this one . Is High Roller working for them now ............. I kid ........ I'm a kidder .

As a matter of fact , I'm playing around with the idea of some how integrating a xft ish foot hold with the RRP system . I think that would be an outstanding combination. I think adjustable holds would really allow you to adjust the ride characteristics of your hull . With hulls getting shorter and wider I think most will want / need to fine tune there foot hold placement. Here is a pic .... don't laugh.

Are you standing on your head. Damn ..... I just lipped off to the SCORN what am I thinking ( I'm now bracing for the swift , sure and superbly executed SCORN RETRIBUTION ) . They are right side up for sure . They can only go in one way . The left side has a cut out for the exhaust and I give props because they nailed the fit in that area .

Nice Idea, but I ride where I ride and quit growing at like 17 years old I think. Seems like they would only be good for someone buying your ski or borrowing it or maybe if you dont know yet where you ride in the tray??????

why cant you just glass them to your hull like standard footholds and foam. The foam gives them support.

the foothold pocket gets glassed to the inside of the outside of the hull with a mixed epoxy putty of some sort and the glassed to the tray are but the pockets are too shallow for sure. then the frame that the foothold slides on gets through bolts from the outside of the hull and then snugged up.

Does any body really KNOW where they should be if they have never been able to adjust there foot holds . Most will settle because it's too much work.

Correct , You have to have a mated surface between the outside of the box and the inside of the gunwale to support the thru bolts of the bracket . i think their would be a lot of stress ie. deflection applied to the hull with the 1/2 inch void filled with foam.

The pix make it look like the tops are deeper. From your last few posts it seems like you know what needs to be done to make them work. So stop type and start mixing:fingersx:

Take a look at the Rickter. The back part of the tray is very narrow. Maybe you have to narrow the side of the SJ to make it exactly like the Rickter. At least it will give you a wider tray which is really nice.

Actually it looks like the rickter is wider at the front but about the same in the back. It's all just eye ballin' it but doesn't look much different to me. Maybe 1/2" is all it takes and the rickter is that much narrower.

Maybe that's the ultimate solution then. Trim the gunwale all the out to the sides or until the trays can flush mount to the sides and then foam/glass everything back into shape. Once the foam is in place, shaping and glassing should be cake.

seems you've got it down.

i don't know how thick the back side of the box is but you may want to put 3 or 4 layers (or more)of glass,glue them to the outside of hull and just glass and fair them in flush with gunwales.
seems there would be a fair amount of stress in that section of the hull.

That was old multi quote trick I learned in the Marine Corp . May be you need a refresher.

Agreed , it is a high stress area . This is turning from a bitch thread to a build thread . That way i can potentially fail publicly .

I filled the bond line and reenforced the sides with some 17 ox biax. Also pored a little plaster - O - Paris for the building of the new boxes ( unless I change my mind ) . I'll need to build them up a little more about a half inch .
In all fairness trying to make a perfect mold for the side of a superjet would some what impossible due to the imperfections in every hull , but in my case they could have been much closer. I digress , this is now a build thread . I will never again mention the name that shall not be mentioned in this thread ; however, if I were to mention it the name would be RRP.

Feel free to send me a pm, I was the first to have them installed at the time where there was no box avaliable , I have pics and can help if needed.Mine where backed with an aluminum plate to make sure the side wall will not get damaged.

i love my FS-1 hull, but i HATE the footholds...

i think your crazy for cutting out the XFT's!

had XFT's on my RN hull... best ever. way more confidence in riding.

i might have to buy those XFT's off you to attach to the FS-1.

A little more progress . Foamed the bottom of the foot hold area added plaster to the casts to make the boxes deeper . I could hit the easy button and dam an area and just foam , glass ,sand , but I'm really enjoying wasting time and material trying to make a box that will work. i'll see how my plaster cast do with the additional layer .

Roo, I have the intentions of using an xft ish enclosed hold adapted to the RRP set up . You may loose the up and down adjustment . I don't know yet . Also They will be some what duck footed . I'm done for now
