300/440/550 The Next Course of Action

Ahhh man. My father and I have been putting in a lot of time to making my 300sx run right and have finally come the conclusion that the engine needs to be rebuilt and bored. We took the pipe off tonight and saw the cylinder looks like complete crap. He said he can't believe it runs as good as it does and has seen engines NOT run with better looking pistons. The compression is 170psi still? How is that possible?

Monday I'll have a crank seal compression test kit because before we even took the pipe off he figured it has to be an air leak because you will tune the carb and reset the idle and the thing will sound and respond great and 20 minutes later you start it and it free revs or stalls when throttle is applied and you have to tune the carb all over WAY out from factory setting. The shop manual even says 2 strokes can get plagued by undiagnosable poor running which is usually a crank case seal leak.

So at this point neither of us wants to be beaten by this 25 year old jet ski.

We are deciding what to do now.

Option 1. Have GroupK bore the cylinder and have a stock looking boat that runs like a 550.

Option 2. Buy a 550 and stuff the guts in the 300.

Either way we will make it run and with the added power I'm gonna put a footstrap for the back foot and start hucking it around. He told me if we did a 550 conversion we are going to end up rebuilding that motor anyways because these things are old. We both think it would be cool to have a stock looking 300sx that can run with bigger skis.

We are both leaning towards the Groupk sleeper mod.

What do you guys think? Can't afford a superjet yet. That's next season. Plus I want 2 ski's so I can take the girl or a friend out with me.

Just looking for any opinions, no harm no fowl, even if that opinion is just get the damn superjet. I'm obsessed with this sport now. I really want this thing to run so I can take someone else out with me for safety, fun enchantment.

You can test the engine for an air leak. Pull the intake and the exhaust, seal the engine up, pump it to 15 psi and see if it holds it over 10 minutes.

A 300sx isnt going to be very good at tricks. Even bored out to the max. I dont know if they made performance parts for them. They were a ski desgined for kids and girls. It will pull you on plane and be pretty fun for a bit. I wouldnt bother with a 550, a piston port one is going to be issues itself, and as far as reliability, the 300sx is miles ahead.

Get a superjet

What do you mean when you say as far as reliability the 300sx is miles ahead.

The 300sx... I've never ridden jet ski's before this...but I come from a "freestyle" backround where I rode "flatland" bmx, which is all about balancing a small bmx bike spinning in circles and crap... not to brag, but that's why I like this 300. One day I want to build it up.

It just has a "freestyle feel". Which is why I don't just want to abandon it. I truly think I can make it fun with a small engine just because of the way the boat feels to me. It almost feels like my Dyno Slammer bmx.

The 550 would most likely be a piston port engine, very tempermental, if you can find a reed valve 550 engine, they are on par with the 300 as far as starting when you hit the button.

The 300 is an ok hull for fresstyle, an engine swap isnt even that hard to pull of on them. Its the pump thats going to hold you back. Its a whole bunch of work to slap a pump worth a chit into that thing. Ride it for a season, save your money, and get a squarenose next season or in winter. Then keep the 300 for firends and a backup.
