94 750SX blew a head gasket and noticed water in the fuel return line. Two questions.....How do I foolproof blowing head gaskets? And is the water in fuel from the gasket or a different problem?

Your head gasket issue and water in the fuel are two separate problems. Use some 3M 1211 gasket sealer on the head and torque down appropriately. As far as the water issue maybe tighten up that fuel cap or check the cap to see if the rubber gasket is still there, or you might be drawing water into your tank from your vent line In the handle pole
