superjet help

Hey Guys new to the site, been maintaining my buddies superjet for a while now, and were trying to get it ready for the weekend as the weather is sunny for once here in the uk lol!!! today i replaced the bendix as it was siezed solid, also changed the stator, my question is i tried turning the engine over by hand from the coupler so can fit the key in the crankshaft to fit the flywheel on but the coupler aint budging took the plugs out too thinking it would make it a bit easy but nothing :(

so i managed to get the flywheel and key on with a mirror to guide me, put the front cover on and connected the battery, and tried flicking the switch to see if it would crank over, each time i pressed the switch the coupler moved liked one tooth (if they makes sense) did it 3 or 4 times and the starter started smoking so disconected the battery

any help will be much appreciated

I'd pull the engine out, or at least move it forward enough to see if you can spin the engine by itself and then see if you can spin the driveline by itself. Sounds like something is stuck. Anything in the pump? Rock?

Time to pull the motor and figure out what the problem is. Could be pistons are seized in their bores due to moisture left in the motor. No way of knowing until you start disassembling.

Take a look thru the exhaust ports and look for signs of a failure.
You should be able to look at the pistons thru the exhaust for signs of scoring, rust, corrosion, etc.
If you pulled the plugs and tried to turn it over it should spin like a crazy.

guys thanks for your replies, haven't had any time as of late to get on here, i managed to free it up with some wd40 down the bores and it was fine, we took the ski out sunday and it was running sweet, same for tonight until it started running rough, for some reason 4 exhaust manifold bolts worked them selves loose and fell out :( was i suppose to locktight them? thanks

Yes, loctite all fasteners- except those 4 which fasten the engine bed plates to the rubber mounts (they should get anti seize compound or grease). Galvanic corrosion (the white powdery stuff on the threads) is also ( ! )
inhibited when using 2 dissimilar metals, i. e. stainless fasteners into aluminum.
Your picture in post 1 shows the flat washer in the wrong place on the starter drive- it goes on the other end of that Bendix!
