Superjet - exhaust flange leaking?

After my last ride on my '92 squarenose, I noticed water dripping from the right rear. Looked closely, and it's not coming from the exhaust hose, it's clearly coming from behind the exhaust exit flange. I assume this means I've got water in the right rear of the hull. From looking in the engine compartment, I see no obvious ways for it to get in there - and my last ride was pretty dry (running buoys, no subs) - no real water accumulation in the hull. Soooo, I'm assuming it's getting in through the flange itself, then draining back out afterwards.

Any advice on what to do next? I'm guessing I'll need to remove the sealant around the front end of the exhaust exit pipe and then drill out the rivets to slide it back - and out - if needed. Then what? Wet foam to remove and replace? Seal it back up with 5200? Any experienced opinions on what to do and expect is greatly appreciated.

If you're in the mood to finish off the season with minimal downtime, just run a bead of 5200 around the flange and then inspect the foam this winter. Re-rivet if they feel loose.

depending how bad it was and how long it has been happening you might have to refoam. im pretty sure this is pretty common, either the exhaust or the bond lines leak.

i have a stress crack in the rear of my boat and i have a leak in the bond line and i have to refoam and re seal every thing.


if you are gonna install footholds this would be a great time to remove the foam all the way down and 5200 from the inside.

After about 700 posts (of me answering other's questions) on that "other" pwc site, I finally asked this same question about a week ago over there. I got absolutely no valuable responses. Then, a somewhat nearby riding buddy of mine, who shall remain nameless per his request for anonimity, sent me over here...

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure it's coming in from the flange. What I'm thinking I could do is drill out the rivets, push the flange/hose assembly out, vac out any water (refoam if needed), then simply reinstall the flange/hose assembly with 5200 and new rivets (or stainless screws). Any thoughts on this?

Is the foam in there molded styrofoam or poured? In other words, is it gonna be really stuck to the exhaust pipe running through?

Footholds? Well, this is the ski I use for racing retro ski class, so I really wanna leave the tray "as is".

Downtime. Not a huge issue. Local racing season is over, and I've got 4 other skis mad at me for ignoring them lately.

Just getting the exhaust line out may be difficult i tried to just pound mine out, instead i had to grind the foam off it before it came out easily.

If it was me I would seal it up with any kind of silicone you can find and forget about it until it's winter.

Leave it alone until winter.

Then drill out the rivets, pound the exhaust tube out, gut the foam with a wire wheel on the end of a long extension and put a shop vac tube through the hole in the engine bay. You'll chew up the foam and suck it out at the same time with NO mess. :cheer:

Silicone the piss out of the tube on the interior.

Then pour some new foam in.

You might also take this opportunity to put some footholds in if you haven't done so already.
