Strange thing - 2007 SJ - emissions control??

A customer brought in a 2007 SJ with drowned motor. I started looking at the parts and noticed that:

- these carbs (2x38mm mikuni) have no Low or High adjusters!!

- the oem exhuast seems to have some sort of insert that looks a bit like it is supposed to affect emissions

Anybody any comments on this?

All the U.S. models are like that since '07.
The adjuster screws are under a pressed in cap to make them what they call 'Tamper Proof' carbs.
Not any fun to remove, but can be done by drilling them out.

As always great info Chuck. Thank you. I guess this was done by Yamaha so kids can't play with the mixture and then ask for warranty repairs

Anyone have a picture of the exhaust insert? curious to see what it looks like..

use left hand turning drill bits if you can get some. Common drill bits turn in a clockwise direction and when drilling through the anti tampering caps with that style it is possible to go through cap hit mixture screw and screw mixture into carb and damage carb. if thats all you got you can make a drill depth limiter out of copper tube. Another way is to use a die grinder from the side

I think that exhaust insert is the same for all models - just looked strange at first glance...
