To be honest, I'd say people realize now more than ever, how much time and money goes into these. You have a flashy ski that can be worth over $20k, is nearly impossible for police to track, nearly impossible to insure, fits in a truck/van/SUV and can be moved by two people. It's a pretty easy target for somebody with a little knowledge of the sport.

And that works in our favor as far as recovery. It's pretty hard to pass off as "just another SJ" when it's one of only 25 or so ever made.

I agree, but sooner or later it catches up to them. My buddy lost both his bikes and his trailer years back. Some how he heard it was a B rider who was behind it, due to noticeable characteristics of his bikes. Years later the same guy was working at a Motocross shop and his boss was informed about the incident. Once you develop that type of reputation, things get a lot different in life.
In the end, I really feel bad for the owner and I hope he can recover his ski.
