Blaster Stock airbox or Flame arrestor

Location
Orlando
My buddy just got his motor freshened up in his 94 B1 and added a riva red pipe. I told him to go with an aftermarket flame arrestor and lose the stock airbox. His mechanic said the stock airbox is the best option.

Isnt the stock airbox too restrictive? I was always under the guise if your free up the exhaust you should free up the intake.

Your input please.

Keeping the water out is important and they are the best at it. If you want to free up airflow remove the screens or only use one. You will need to rejet if you do this or use anything aftermarket (lower pop-off at least).

stock air box system is best for rec riding and surf riding, keeps the water out, Aftermarket filter lets water in... if your racing or you need every bit of power then switch over.

Maybe 'need' wasn't the best word to use there. If you want to keep your tune optimized you should take a close look at your jetting after any change upstream of the carb venturi. Removing the choke blades/shafts falls into this category as well.

very true...case in point I had a B2 and removed the choke plates/shafts and switched to aftermarket flame arrestors, the ski was lean and starved for fuel I went to larger 140 main jets to compensate and it worked well....

So is this true only for the B1 or does this apply to most skis? I ask because most all modded skis I see, and have owned, have always had flame arrestors in place of the stock airbox. I know for my motorcycles and cars, the stock airbox is the first to go when modifying the exhaust.

I have flame arestors on every ski I own and have never had problems with water ingestion. They have the little socks around them to help with that, but knowing this, I will spend my money elsewhere next time I get a ski that doesn't have FAs on it being that there seems to be no added benefit.

Thanks for all the info guys.
