i'm about to install my used tl. i got the install manual from the MSD website (thx yamacat and wetjet701). the install instructs are for the new programmable brain. i've got the older program brain with the removable modules. without having the indicator light on the brain is there anyway to check static timing. i'm gonna round up a timing light. the instructions for the new brain never mention using a timing light at all. what's installed now is initial retard at 5000, rev lim 8000, and 3/1000. the mods are a limited bpipe, 35cc heads, new prop on a 61x 701.

You could use a timing light, but you need to keep in mind that it will not be static timing, but timing at whatever the idle RPM is.
Addionally, you will need to make some timing marks on the cases, and you will need to have some sort of bendix holder so you can start and run the engine and still see the flywheel.
Here is what I did for my TL, which also had the Timing LED broken:
Hook up a spark plug, ground it against the engine.
Rotate flywheel until the plug sparks.
Rotate the flywheel back and forth on that point to get a bit more accurate as to exactly where it sparks.
Don't forget that using this method, you will not need to subtract/add 5 degrees as you would using the Timing LED.

matt...thx 4 keepn' up with the forum. when i make marks on the case, are all the degree measurements based on the degree ruler on the flywheel? how do u get accurate +/- 1 degree measurements. mcdog's got a spare flywheel cover to do it with a light. is one way better than the other?
