Starter Bad ?

New S/S switch . When I push start button nothing happens . Touch both connections at solenoid and sometimes get starter to turn over - sometimes nothing and sometimes starter barely turns over . Have to assume starter is bad . Anyway to check ?

Take off the starter and try it straight to a battery

Just keep a good grip on it so it doesn't jump out of your hands

With what I described , safe to say that the solenoid is good ?

Do you hear it click? You should disconnect the positive output so the starter isn't just dumping amps if it is dead, and check for continuity across the solenoid when you hold down the start button.

If you never get anything with the button, but short positive across the solenoid to starter output and sometimes get something, then the solenoid may be part of the problem. Not enough info.
