Sore joints/muscles the day after

I'll start off by saying I'm out of shape for the most part and don't really get much exercise other than riding my ski.

I rode Saturday for about 5 hours and now I'm paying for it something fierce. The problem is that my left shoulder is kiling me. I can move it but when I go up to or past the chicken-wing pose (elbow bent, arm raised) it hurts like hell.

Do any of you ever experience joint pain like this? I've not had this before and I'm hoping it's just bail-related. Any ideas on what would help. I have ice packs and Biofreeze (think Icy Hot) and am popping 4 ibuprofren about every 6
hours.

if you experience this, how long does it usually last? And can you recommend any exercises or stretches to prevent this? Thanks.

Yep, I get sore too, especially in the spring when I have't ridden all winter.

I can tell you this: After a day of hard riding, my Chiropractor gets my joints back in shape (luckily my Chiropractor is also my wife). The shoulder is the most complicated joint in the body. Not all Chiropractors adjust things like shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, etc. My wife is the only one here in town that does extremities out of 13, so you will need to check around.

You may have also tore or strained something. In that case, it will just take time to heal.

Also, I'd not want to pop that many IB for long. That's a lot of drugs for your body to process. Especially if you are taking extra strength at 400mg each (6400mg/day). See if your doc will give you some Vicodin or maybe something stronger. I try to use the least amount of medication to get the job done, but that's my preference (I'm a bit anti-pharma).

Even when I was working out regularly, I was still hurting after the first couple season rides and after pretty much every surf ride. I have to believe that someone who rides surf several times a week is going to be ripped without trying.

Drink lots of water and take omega 3 fish oil. It won't eliminate it but it will help. The only thing I find really helps is conditioning like Matt suggested. The more I rode the less I hurt. Unfortunately i ride so seldom these days it always hurts to ride.

I am always sore the day after some big surf. I usually ride 1x or 2x a week from the end of april until the middle of november. It never goes away. The only time i'm not sore is if i putt around in the bay which I do maybe twice a season.

I'm still hoping I didn't tear anything. I feel like if I did, I would be in much worse pain. This is a painful reminder that I need to get my butt back in the gym and stop eating so well (much).

Just ride more. I think that would better prepare you for riding than a gym. That's what I found, anyways - YMMV

Do joint mobility drills every morning, with a foam rolling session and stretching session after riding. This tends to work the best for me when I am out riding.

Also, don't skimp on sleep, water, or your nutrition(if you have a bunch of wheat, gluten, and processed sugar in the diet, your already increasing the inflammation your experiencing).
