SN vs RN for an old newbie

Well, after a 10 year layoff I am ready to get back into the tray again (busy doing the house, wife and 2 kid thing). I had an '87 Kawi 550 and a '92 SN (after lurking here I finally figured out the references to SN and RN.) I was a Superjet fanatic and could never figure out why anyone would ride anything else. All of my time was spent "freestyling" as I could never figure out why anyone would want to ride around a bunch of bouys. Plus, back then, only racers wore helmets which made it harder to look cool.

I am looking to buy a used ski $1500-2500 range. I dont expect to be pulling backflips, but I will do my share of surfriding and getting airborne.
It seems like the old SN is a favorite of many. Anyone willing to give me the pros and cons of SN vs RN and what years to look for?

Sorry Kawi owners, but you can't switch me to dark side. So unless you have something relevant to add, keep your SXI/SXR ramblings to yourself.

See ya soon...and thanks.

Basically the RN and the SN are the same except for the top deck and cases i think. There are a lot more hoods and such available for the RN than there are for the square however the square is already lower than the round.

Where are you located I have my square for sale in tampa.

Get a squarenose with a 701. It is just as good if not better(lowered bracket) for handling and can be freestyled just as well as the roundnose. Besides the lowered bracket, the top decks are different and the 96 and up roundnoses have a 62t case/61x cylinder combo with dual carbs.

Just look for any superjet that has a true 701 in it(61xcases/61x cylinder or 62tcases/61xcylinder), and you'll be more than happy.

I'm the same as you. 87,550 buried, collecting dust and a couple of 95, waterlogged 701's with a few mods. Couldn't reno the house, look after the 3 kids and have time to ski as well. (I gave up with the house and involved the kids n wife in beaching and watersports.... Life's too short) I've ridden a few mates RN's and personally, like my SN's more. Maybe it's me but they just seem more fun.

I'm with Gainera on this one. (didn't realise why the ride was so different until he pointed it out, as above) Decent SN's and RN's (sounding??... far better than mine) come up for sale sometimes on this forum and personally, within reason, I'd wait for a good one with all the mods. Firstly, do the research. If your too far away to test ride, take your time to read a few hundred threads, posts etc. Hopefully you'll ensure the sellers got a good, honest reputation and thus hopefully you'll get a decent ski.

Hope thats some help. My 2c. Cheers and good luck.

Largo? You can buy my 650 SX so I can buy a square!

Ok, that wont happen, but after you get your ski, we go to Lake seminole or Ft. De soto on sundays if you ever wanted to come. Just don't be creepy and make the girls feel uncomfy. Sometimes they come and one of the guys that came was staring at them all day.

I'd get a 550 before an SX.

Sounds good... I have never been too wild about the lake but maybe things have changed. FD sounds great.
I'll try not to stare ALL day... but don't get mad if they stare at me :speechless:

We go to the lake because my buddy lives a few blocks from it and we mostly wakeboard. Now that I have spent more time on my ski becomming a better rider and making it more reliable, we'll be going to the fort more often. We'll be out at shell island sunday if I can get my CDI fixed.

I haven't ridden the 550 or the super jet, but I'm pretty happy with the SX. I won't be doing any free style so it's not a big loss.

I used to ride mostly Belleair up to Clearwwater and some Dunedin and John's Pass. Ocasionally Tierra Verde. Once I get something I'll be looking for people to ride with... right now, everyone that I used to ride with does not have a ski anymore or has bought a couch.
