Super Jet sn Hard to start in water

I've been searching for awhile and yet I've had a hard time finding an answer for my problem. I just picked up a "new" squarenose and it ran exceptionally well for having sat for 3 or 4 years. It started up very quickly and easily. The second time I brought it out, I started having problems, however. Out of water it fired right up but once I stuck it in, it was harder to start but not very concerning. After coming in multiple times to take breaks, it got increasingly difficult to start and eventually it would not start at all and I was forced to pack it up. I was dumbfounded because of how well it was starting the first ride. I should add that during the day 2 ride, it was hard to start but once it started it ran very well. I just made sure that if I fell, I hung on for dear life so I didn't get stranded lol.

I brought it home and dumped a little fuel down the carb and it fired up easily. Being the simplest fix at the time, I decided to change the fuel lines hoping the stock lines were just getting crappy. I was kind of correct because it fired right up after changing the lines. I thought I was good to go, so I took it to the river and tried it out. Unfortunately it was still quite difficult to start in the water for some reason and I know it could be a million different problems.

I found that if I hold the rear end up or at least the exhaust out of the water, it at least gave me some sputters. Finally after cranking for several minutes, it partially started. It was firing very slowly as if starved for fuel. After about 50 or so feet of me holding the throttle wide open, it suddenly revved up. (scared the hell out of me)

What should I try first to get it running better?

Thanks! Any suggestions are appreciated.

My ski did the same thing and I
Found the needle and seat were worn and the needle would stick open and flood unless at WOT.
I would suggest a carb rebuild, good luck

whats your compression? how is your spark?

if those check out good I would rebuild the carb and then check the reeds after that.

It does sound like you have excessive fuel if it cleans out at wot so the above suggestions are your best bet. But if you do find that you have a fuel delivery issue check the fuel selector. You can just bypass it and go directly from the fuel tank to the carb. I have seen this issue before.

As said above, I'll pretty much guarantee that you have a broken reed.

While you have the carb off though, pull open at least the fuel pump side of the carb and clean/replace the little internal fuel filter too.

And, also a good idea to open the other side of the carb and clean the jets and needle&seat. Get all of that 4 year old varnish out of there.

If you have a spare reed, you're looking at 1 hour max so get going...
