I just picked up a pair of Sidi mtb shoes for $20 including fairly new SPD cleats.

Oh, the guy was a roadie too so the tops are in perfect condition and only a little wear on the bottoms.

So now, I have shoes, a set of SPD and Crank Brothers cleats (came with the bike) and a set of eggbeaters (came with bike also). I've been using some SPD pedals for a while and going to try the CB's to see if I like them better or not before buying SPD pedals.

Ok, first ride on the eggbeaters today. I have something going on with my left cleat, I couldn't hardly get it to click in. Right foot, no problem, left, OMG it was frustrating. I'll have to check things out, maybe it's bolted on wrong or something or cocked at an angle.

I do think I like the Crank Brothers cleat system better than Shimano's. It seemed easier to get out of, like a more natural motion.

I am still on the fence which way to go, but think I'll be ok no matter which way I go since I do like both.

And the $20 (steal) Sidi shoes rock.

I used to use Look pedals (haven't been on my MTB in a while hence "used to"). I never saw them for sale in the US, but they were absolutely great. They had plenty of float, you could crank them down tight so you had to work to get out, or set them nice and loose if you wanted. I never had a problem hooking in, even when they were caked in thick mud, and they always gripped tight. I love those pedals.

Look makes nice pedals, harder to find.

I have always liked the SPD's. Never had issues with mud clearance. But i try not to ride when it that muddy. Dont want to damage trails.

That was back in England - if you didn't ride when it was muddy, then you really didn't ride!. I remember once having so much mud caught around the breaks that I could only just get the wheels to turn cranking down with all my weight on the pedals - just from the resistance of the mud! That sucked....

Check for interference between the pedal and the treads on the bottom of the shoe. I had to take a rotary tool to the treads of a clip in shoe before and I think it may have been for my egg beaters.

I use cb pedles and love them exp if you get into mud they are easy to clip in now you know there is two different ways you can install the clips on the bottom of your shoe.. And SPd pedals you can't use if there cloged up.. Also the cb are lighter.. But it's what ever feels better to u.. Idk if that help any lol..

Another ride today and was one of my best rides (in the 2 months I've been doing it). I did around 2.5 miles on snow covered trails and got the eggbeaters working better. Like Dustin mentioned I had to barely clearance the shoe to let it go down far enough to click reliably.

I think after today's ride that I like the Crank Brothers cleat system better. They seem easier/more natural to unclip and I really like having 4 surfaces to click into. What I don't like is the price---all of their stuff is higher than SPD stuff it seems.

I'm wearing my old snowboarding socks, they work amazingly well. However, I only ride for maybe an hour when it's that cold. I think it hit 24F yesterday and I was fine, worked up a good sweat.

2 long sleeve t-shirts under a lined hoodie, then a pair of pajama pants under fleece pants and a sock cap under my helmet, plus my old snowboarding gloves. Works great.

Like I mentioned, yesterday was one of my best rides. I was comfortable on the new bike and the pedals and bumped my skill level up some I think as I was able to get through some tougher spots without unclipping or anything.
