Welcome to the site! Just about anyone who responds will ask you what you want to do with the ski, but sometimes that's hard to know when you're just getting into the sport. For that money, I would think that your best bet would be to find a pre-96 Yamaha Superjet, which everyone calls a square nose, or just sn. It's a great ski which you can modify in tons of ways, taking it either in a freestyle direction or in a racing direction. Hands down I would say that's your best starter ski.

They're also fairly easy to pick up, there's a million after-market parts, and a huge body of knowledge on this site about every last thing you could ever want to know. You can't go wrong with a squarenose.

Yes by all means try to pick up an old square. You might have to spend 1200 to 1500 but you will get a ski that is much more rideable and will not lose much value. You can start on it and pick up lots of parts to make it handle and run better. If you can find a 94 or 95 superjet it will have the old style 701 engine, it makes much better power than the 90 - 93 650 models. Either way get one soon while the market is in your favor and we will get you shredding in no time.

I very much agree with them, i started riding on a 650sx now i just bought my rn round nose superjet they are lighter cheaper more avaliable spend a little more on the ski i promise it will save you in the long run there is always a reason for a price mine was 800 and it cost me more than that for a crank. go super jet all the way.:usa2:

just keep your eyes open for one , go on craigslist keep looking, don't be afraid if it is in peices to get it cheaper, you'll be helped to put it together here. i picked mine for 500, all i had to do is put it back together. althogh i decided to do something with it like defoam and paint and other goodies, but it come with the teritory.

any superjet will be a great choice the older kawi's are tempermental to say the least (for the nah sayers I have owned at least 7 in the last summer of which all had there moments some fewer then other but still a pain) vs the superjet which has its moments but doesnt have problems like a stubborn. ie yes its getting spark and has compression and gas but wont start...

just get a superjet 94-95 will still be cheaper then the newer ones but look at the mods done to it, they add up when you buy them on your own. I bought a 1000$ superjet last year and just passed the 4000$ mark with mods last month...

If you think you would like a squirrly hull buy a conversion js440 or js550 with the 650sx or 750sx motor. Or you can build one next to nothing, they are fun skis to start on as long as you like a skinny hull. I have a 90 701 sn sj, a 94 fx1, and a 84 js440/750 conversion ski and I have to say for all around riding I prefer my sj. I can keep up with my couch buddys on the sj, they are great for flying down the lake and are great all around skis for any kind of riding. Especially beginner friendly, my couch buddies cant ride my squirrly hull skis but they can at least stand up on the sj.

Then a squarenose is definitely what you need. Don't worry about wrenching - these skis are VERY easy to work on - there really isn't anything you can't fix with some fairly basic tools, some locals who can help, and the courage to dive in. You have plenty of people close by and on the X for help with repairs and modifications, and if those 615 freeloaders, oops, I mean freeriders won't help, then come on down to the 256 :bigok:

Get a SN SJ. I just saw one a few weeks ago sell on ebay for 900 something.

Take the advice from these guys. Alot of people on the site have been riding for years and have alot of experiance. I went the hard way and started on a 650 sx and three months later bought a 750 sx.

94 or 95 so you can get the early style 701 engine. It makes a lot better power than the 650.

Thats good advice but at the same time you might only ride the 650sx for a short while and then want something more suitable. Thats what happened to me. I would go with a SJ man start right from the begining get a ski you can learn to ride on and is a great platform to mod when you need to. save the hassle of buying muiltiple skis in a short time period
