SJ electrical question

I have a 94 superjet, last two times I went out on it after I fell a few times when I would try to crank the ski I had no spark. Yet I could unplug the black and white wires that go from the start/stop switch to the ignition box and it would crank and run just fine until I plugged it back in and then it would die. So I would bring it home and do the normal flush on the engine by unplugging the wires again. Then the next day when I got home from work it would fire right up.

So am I right by assuming the start/stop swich is somehow getting shorted out or is this some other kind of problem?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions to correct this or advice if there is something else that is going bad.....

You have either a corroded or bad start/stop switch OR the wires are damaged. I've seen the wires lose contact at the connectors.

Sounds like you got it figured out. Take the start stop switch apart. You should be able to take all the little switches inside apart and clean them up. Dab a little electrical grease on the contacts and you should be good to go. Just be careful there are some small parts in there.

You are right, the start / stop / lanyard switches are causing your problem. The stop / lanyard switches are serviceable. Be careful taking them apart and pay attention to how the springs and contacts come apart especially in the lanyard switch. Burnish the contact surfaces to clean off the buildup. Do not put any grease inside the housing, just get it clean and dry. This is common and some are worse than others. I think that Jet Ski Solutions has a stock improved setup for this if you dont want to try to fix your originals.

I have tried dielectric grease on the contacts and it just made a mess and I had to go back into the switch within months. Some of my riding buddies tried grease and had problems too. I have had the best results with just cleaning the contacts and making sure it is dry and clean..

Thanks guys I appreciate all the info. I ordered a new switch but I am gonna pull the old one all apart for the practice and to keep as a spare. Can't hurt to have one laying around.

Also is there any way to make the switches a litlle more water tight seems like it is way to easy for something like this to happen? Especially since I ride the ocean.

I put grease in mine when it started acting up. But I did clean all the contacts first. Its been about 4 years since I did this. Havent had any problems since. Did the same thing to 2 other skis and to date both are ok.
