single side exhaust

I want to run a single side exhaust on the right side just in front of the bulkhead, below the bond line just a bit. Anyone see a problem with this? I'm worried about A: it will be too loud (or will it be the same?) and B: the stock exhaust tube is angled to prevent water from flooding the whole thing. With my fat *** on the ski though, I probably flood that thing all the time though...

Opinions? Pictures? All appreciated! I want to get rid of the stock exhaust tube and place a one-way in there, but it wouldnt be angled, so my REV's wont hit it.

you can order the tube that WCF uses on his skis. its an aluminum rear/side exhaust tube. it usues the same hole through the bulkhead but instead of coming out of the rear of the ski, it comes out the right side, in back, under the bondline.... plenty of room for any foothold.

That looks like a really nice piece, but Im done spending money for the time being (probably $80 or more right?). I work at a Fishing/Hunting store, so I thought a stainless rod holder would do the trick  Ideally I'm trying to get my hands on a carbon side-exhaust through from somebody who may have one. Then I'd just run it right in front of the bulkhead. We'll see, I just got done digging out a bunch of wet foam...

Man I'd love to get a WCF hull later down the line, those things are sweet!

why is that? Is it loud, fumes or...

Where would you prefer it if not using the WCF tube (forward the bulkhead)

it just isnt a visually pleasing spot to put it, IMO.... although its very functional.

if i was running a single..... hmmm... i guess if i didnt go the WCF route, id go with the way youre considering. i think a single up front would be too loud.

I prefer the side exhaust by the bulkhead, althoug you are correct about it not being asthetically (sp) pleasing.

Less smoke get's in the riders face, and the nose seems to be bhind the rider.

The front exhaust outlet by the nose is much more noisy, and directs more smoke towards the rider, but is more functional and asthetically pleasing.

Hey Charlie, how much is the WCF side exhaust setup?

I beleive it's $90, but I am definitely putting one on the square nose I am re-building.

The philosophy is this - if the exhaust it funneled out the rear side of the ski, the gases will be channeled up the side, instead of possibly getting sucked up the pump or creating a void under the ski for it to slip in.

So in going side/rear exhaust, I am betting I can get ride of the front exhaust all together (and the extra cost/probelms), and still have a functional ski that does not slip on it's own gasses.

its like a diaper for your ski.

I love mods!.........When skis came with front and side exhausts, people went through great pains to put in rear exhausts and the manufacturers paid attention and gave us factory rear exhausts. Now the trick mod is to put a front or side exhaust in and bag the rear exhaust, what next thumb throttles!:banghead:

Front/side exhaust cons.....noise, dirt, smoke. Come someone explain the pros??? If it's bubbles in the pump during tailstand/spin, then you need to practice your tailstand/spins!

I've seen more mods just for the sake of mods (not that there's anything wrong with that) on skis and I bet the folks who did the mods don't even know why their doing them other than everyone else is doin' it.

a tailstand on an SJ is near impossible with the stock exhaust. its not that "doing a tailsatnd" is so necessary that we have to mod our skis to do them. its that a lot of tricks begin, transition and end with the ski in a nose-up position (just like back-landing in the surf) and it sucks when you want to hit the throttle and take off but the pump is spinning in a pocket of exhaust, instead of moving water. a mod just for the sake of doing a mod would be a hydroturf cover over a stock chinpad. i know exactly why i add front exhausts to my SJs. for function.

I mainly wanted it so I wouldnt have to notch my footholds, and it would get rid of some weight, and save me from drilling holes in the other side. I agree its probably not aesthetically pleasing, I may just lower the angle a little bit instead. The tailstand plus would just be an extra.

I have all winter to do stuff, it's really no trouble at all for me to do, it, the engine already out, and I already have to do glass work (left back side smashed off) and whatnot. If Im gonna do it, Im gonna do it all at the same time, so Im considering nearly every aspect.

T the exhaust.....run it out the front......it's louder but not too loud and it serves a purpose and it's hella easier to put in

I have no problems from fumes.....I cant count onf my right hand how many times I was actually hit with enough hot/sinking air to even notice.

Monkey jumps, Fifty Fiftys, any tail landing, supermans, etc. I love my front exhaust.....it's like my scupper.....not that I have it....I can never ride without one

I did a rear side exhaust with a rodholder and I like it ok. Most of the time the exhaust is going into the water, even when cruising. It is probably quieter than a straight rear exhaust overall. I'm sure the water causes a bit of unnecessary backpressure and probably a little performance loss, but it doesn't kill anything. I did a matching outlet on the other side where my one-way valve dumps. I say go for it.
