At PHP we build a small crate for each motor that the bedplates bolt down to and the entire thing is screwed together and have had zero issues shipping :)

If you look under my profile there is a picture album with how I do it usually. I know ups charges a lot more if they see wood or word crates. My local store told me wood was fine but stickit in a cardboard box and it will be a lot cheaper.

Here's how not to do it. A few years ago my dad bought an old Tri-Sport motor off an ebay seller for spare parts. The guy put it in a garbage bag, then a ravaged old cardboard box and sent it out. The thing came in with the fly wheel cover shattered. Luckily that was all that broke in shipping. The guy stopped replying after the sale.

I've shipped a few different ways...bolted to a wooden crate, in a cardboard box with plywood floor and stuffed with peanuts and inside a larger cardboard box that is lined with peanuts, and inside a Rubbermaid tote...make a wood floor, garbage bag around the motor and fill the tote with spray foam to lock it in place and then 1/4" plywood roof and zip tie the top on. USPS will handle up to 70 lbs so a tote works well since it has handles. I'd say a wooden crate is great...all of them cost u about $20-30 or so in supplies.

Additional info...

I just used a 16x16x16" wood crate (thx mcdog), removed the bedplates and padded the sides and floor with polystyrene with a minimum of 2 layers (3/4" thick layers). Even with 3/4" thick plywood for crate construction total weight came out to 74lbs. FedEx shipping from Ga to Wisconsin = $75. Not bad.
