Shearing a coupler.

Anyone ever strip out a coupler? We (not mine) had that happen over the weekend on a square, sucked a rock and there was a loud pop, the couplers turn, but not the midshaft.

Crab,
I don't see how we could fix JeffP's stripped coupler - we'd have to fab something to thread over the shaft, then run oversized threads into the coupler... More work than it's worth in my opinion. Easier all around to buy another coupler.

So, just to post an update...

It wasn't the coupler that sheared, but the shaft. I saw it for myself today.

The shaft sheared right behind the threads.

JeffP has a toploader intake grate. He must have sucked in a big rock as he beached in Mukilteo. The shock from that rock wedging the impeller must have been just right to break that shaft (maybe it was already cracked).

I was amazed that a machined shaft gave before a cast OEM coupler - but that's what I saw...

The best part, I took my big eze-out and the remaining threads came right out of the coupler by hand!
