Shaft stuck. why?

Location
East Coast.
im rebuilding a few things in my ski. i took the pump off with no problem. i run dual cooling, jet the carbs, etc. so when i go to put the pump back on i notice that the pump slid back and im not able to put the bolts on. Then i notice i got to much coupler spacing. I figured i could remove the ring around the impeller to more room, remove the cone and tap it forward. Well it worked and moved the mid shaft up but now for the life of me i cant pull the shaft back out. Its not seized. what the heck is going on? i saw someone got a slide hammer which seems like a good way to get it off but how come its being so damn difficult? help.

It sounds like you jammed the splines too far into the midshaft. The internal splines on the midshaft are not the same dimensions all the way into the very end, due to the way they are manufactured.

You may have to unbolt the midshaft and make your pump/midshaft into a slide hammer to get it loose.

jetmaniac took a 20mm nut, welded an adapter nut onto that for use with a slide hammer (harborfreight.com). Take off the pump cone, the end of the drive shaft is threaded for your convenience. You might need to block between the midshaft coupler and the firewall.
