A few years back my buddy blew his snowmobile motor, the problem was the bearings were just regular bearings and the factory fix was just sealed bearings, So when I rebuilt my pump I used sealed bearings and its been 3 years with out a problem anybody else do this? The bearings were also 1/5 the cost from OEM

The purpose of greasing the mid shaft is not to grease the bearings.
It's just a displacant to keep water out.

A few years back, I did SPM and vibration analysis for rotating industrial equipment (outside equipment).
No bearing (in reasonable price range) is 100% sealed. It would still be a very bad idea to let sealed bearings sit in water.

Maybe something has changed in the past few years?

EDIT: Sealed would probably be better. I just wouldn't trust them submerged in water.

Totally agree Matt. Sealed bearing are really just to keep grease in and dirt out...not water out. I mis-spoke. I just think it'd be way better to let sealed bearing sit in watery grease than normal bearing sit in watery grease.

On a side note... I keep hearing about people putting new bearings in their midshafts but I've never anyone explain how to do it. Do they have to be pressed in or what?

It's about the same press-fit as pump bearings. I.E., you can do it with a hammer.

OEM is a Koyo Seiko sealed bearing, however what many people don't know is the bearing is repackable...each side has a plastic seal that pops off...you can clean them and repack them...The blasters have a wider bearing that can be used also...

the bearings that came out of my pump were not sealed bearings, and the shape a got my ski in i highly doubt he changed them...

The Bearings that go in the pump and midshaft are the same. 6205 is the bearing number. Yes the the midshaft is a sealed bearing. And I believe the point of the grease fitting on the midshaft is to lube the seals. If there was no lube the seal lips would burn up. The pump yes have the seals removed from the bearings. And they sit in a grease bath, were there is a more opportunity of lubrication. Yes I know a lot of guys use a hammer to install bearings and yes I did it at one time. But you should use a press if possible. You can actually dimple/dent the bearing races and shorten the life of the bearing using a hammer to install. just my 2 cents
