Routing of steering teleflex cable

My RN SJ has been in pieces since before X-mas so that I could re-paint the entire boat. I am now putting it back together, and I am scratching my head trying to figure out what is the correct way to route the steering teleflex cable (my engine is not in yet).
Where the teleflex cable comes down out of the pole, does it drop down behind the waterbox and then along the bottom of the hull (by the engine mounts) below the rubber exhaust, or does it drop down out of the pole and make a sharp turn and go over the waterbox and behind the rubber exhaust (and continue aft along the top/bottom hull seam)?
I don't think that it can go down in front of the waterbox, because that route seems to be too long and my cable goes too tight upon turning the bars limit to limit.
If I had been more organized, I should have taken a pic before I disassembled everything. Thanks in advance for advice.

Yep - I just did mine yesterday...

Route the cable into the ski from the back end first - mine kept getting caught in the fitting at the back of the hull...

The cable routes along the right side of the ski (as you'd be standing in the tray), through a loop holding your positive battery cable, then right behind the waterbox and up into the handlepole.

Take care when you're sliding the cable into the keeper on the pole, and also pay attention when you place the keeper on the back end. This is where I had the most trouble (though I installed an aftermarket cable and it wasn't an exact match).

On the back side, there's a rubber stopper that is pressed into the hull fitting by a keeper that fits into a groove on the cable. Behind that is a washer, then the nut holding it all together.

Good luck,

I'm not sure I understand Dblock. Do you route in front or in back of the water box? I just did mine two weeks ago, and I routed mine in front of the waterbox. I have it routed on the bottom of the hull under the carbs, behind the battery, in front of the water box, and then it bends upward to the pole. It's a sweeping turn this way and makes it easily accessible if you need to change it again in the future. When the gas tank goes in, the cable is in between the tank and the waterbox.

Your way sounds easier than mine... I just repeated what was there originally - behind the waterbox.

Mines a SN. I wonder if there's a difference between RN & SN cable lengths...? If I were to route in front of the waterbox, I think I'd have a bit of extra cable to deal with between the hole leading up to the handlepole & the hole in the back of the engine compartment. Behind the waterbox on my ski left all the cable accounted for easily.

Yeah, you bring up a good point about the extra length. Mine is a SN too and routing it in front of the box caused extra slack. I believe by routing it the way I did (if i recall correctly) it creates half a 'U' and then goes towards the back of the ski.
