rotator cuff/tendon tears..

A few weeks ago i under rotated a bf and held on to a pretty hard pancaked flop, done it before and no biggie, but this time when i went to quickly get back on my ski in surf i knew something wasnt the same.
Turns out i tore my subscapularis tendon completely off the bone in my shoulder and caused a partial tear in my supraspinatus tendon as well. need sugery to repair, they have to put an ancor in the bone, thread some kevlar cord to it and tie the tendon back to it with some kind of fancy marine knot...getting it done in about a week.
Anyone else have the pleasure of dealing with this? docs are saying a month in a sling, and 4 to 6+ months before any impact sports again. the recovery time really blows. the arm seems to still work ok in most directions if i can overlook the pain, and since been on mx bike and one ride on ski with the help of a shoulder brace.
wondering if there are any supplements to help aid in tendon/ligiment healing..? have my eye on some upcoming freeride events in few months and need to be good again.

I messed up my right shoulder on an mx bike. Then through my arm out pitching (baseball) I tore my rotator cuff, labrum and kinda seperated my right shoulder as the bone sticks out a bit on the top of my shoulder. I was recommended surgery but went the physical therapy route because I would of been in a sling for 6 months. I'm fine now but my right arm can pop out of place sometimes If I put it under stress in a weird angle but hasn't happened lately, was working out alot before it happened and more after so that helped with the initial damage and recovery. I would say surgery would help in the long run and potentially fix you up altogether but I couldn't bare doing nothing for 6 months. I wasnt able to really do much shoulder movement definitely not go in the surf with a stand up or even surf because of paddling for a couple months and this happened 2 years ago.
In the beginning I would recommend light weight rotator cuff exercises maybe with a 5lb weight (high reps) and even mix in some of the resistance bands. If you decide to not go through with the surgery.

Dude I can tell you from experience to just take it easy. Get the surgery, don't wait, and just listen to them about recovery time. I messed up my rotator cuff over a year ago and kept putting off having it checked out and it's done nothing but get worse. It's pretty pathetic at this point and as soon as I get some down time from work this winter I am going to look into getting surgery. It just falls out of the socket now and some mornings I wake up with it dislocated. It's pitiful and I regret waiting this long and letting it get this bad.

Had the surgery yesterday, anchored broken tendon back to bone, repaired another tear on cuff and added some clearance between two bones that almost rubbing on each other now. surg itself wasnt that bad, but man am i feeling it now, even with pain meds every 4hrs crazy pain.. but in the end i know its what needed to be done.

My Father-in-law had the surgery done 6 weeks ago. He just got cleared on monday to stop wearing the sling and gets to move from passive to active exercises.

The first week was pretty hard on him but he's been getting around pretty good ever since. He fights more of a mental battle with having surgery than the actual surgery so it's hard to judge how bad the whole thing has really been.

Good luck on your recovery. Be very diligent on your exercises, lack of motion for any length of time and your body will begin to build scar tissue that you will just have to break thru to regain range of motion. The more that builds, the more it's going to hurt so you will will want to break it down in many small steps instead.

Damn dude. Just heard about this the other day. Sorry to hear you hurt yourself so bad. Work on your recovery and we will see ya out there next season. Its only a couple months of jet skiing. Being healthy is way more important.

This thread scares the chit out of me. I rode one day a few months ago did something and didn't really notice it untell I went to brush my teeth that night. my arm didn't want to go up but at the same time it didn't hurt to do it. doc says its a rotator cuff but because I worked like that the last 3 months I have full range of motion. I am at home doing nothing for the next 3-4 weeks and going to see if that helps. I can ride but the second I pull up on the bars it feels like some one stabbed me in the bicep with a 1/2" 3/4" knife. I hope the surgury works for you do you care to tell us the price on that ? I was going to start a thread on this but figured I would just post up here..

I know he is back to riding now. I don't think he is 100% yet though. Those injuries take a long time to get back there again. Lot's of physical therapy

There was no way around sugery for me,when I did it i tore my subscap(front) tendon totaly off, when that happens it also causes bicep tendonitis, the bicep tendon can pop out of its groove, that needed to be fixed as well, they ancor a loop in the bone for it to ride in, I also caused a tear in my supraspinatus tendon(on outside of shoulder). i had no movement of arm in one direction, and bad pain from other, i also believe i caused a tear on my left shoulder as well, but am living with it until my right arm is 100% again, never really thought twice about this ever happening, they say there is really no way for the rotator cuff tendons to heal themselfs, you can strengthen the muscles and build tendons stronger around a tear, but it will always be a point of weakness when you reach the end the load capacity of your tendon. the recovery after the sugery is the worst part of the whole ordeal,im still in phys therpy 2 days a week and do daily home stretches etc, i am only at about 70-80% of range of motion, even with the intense forced stretching at phys therpy, even with help of pain killers its still feels like torture, i have gotten back on my ski (in no way am i soposed to) trying to take it easy and just be out in the water, i cant even board it in deep water yet without climbing onto the tray first and then quickly grabing the bars before falling over half of the time..lol. as far as cost,im really thankful to have med insurance, the sugery i had was half arthroscopic(on top) and they had to open the front with about a 6" long incision, so i guess it was more involed if i hadnt totaly tore it off, it cost 20+k, even with the insurance covering that, the time lost from work, phys therpy,co payments etc, it cost me alot.. wouldnt wish it upon anyone. good luck with yours, and hopefully its not a tear etc.

(i will be doing constant strength training from now on,on upper body/ shoulder area to try and avoid this from ever happening again.)
