Breaking News: Andy Irons Passes Away
Sad news has made its way into the Surfer offices this afternoon as we’re hearing confirmed reports that 3X World Champion Andy Irons has passed away.
At this time the cause of death is unknown, although sources inside the family say that he passed away en route from the World Tour event in Puerto Rico to his home in Hawaii. The 32 year-old-hawaiian was deemed too ill to travel on his connecting flight from Texas to Hawaii and was grounded there. Unconfirmed reports say that he passed away in his Dallas hotel room.
SURFER extends their sincerest condolences to the Irons family.
Stay tuned as the story develops.

HONOLULU – (November 2, 2010) — The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii’s Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion. Irons, 32, withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. "Local officials said the cause of death was not immediately known, but The Star-Advertiser reported it was a being investigated as a possible overdose, citing information provided by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.

The examiner's office said a container of the prescription drug zolpidem was found on the nightstand in Irons' hotel room and that methadone was found inside it. Zolpidem is commonly used for insomnia. A number of other drugs also reportedly were found on the nightstand."

Can they not just wait a few days to report on what may have been found in his room?

Why??????

When someone is in excellent health like I am sure he is, they do not just die. You do not report what is found, people will speculate and wonder. I would rather them report what they found.

Decency. What purpose does releasing the information right now server other than journalistic sensationalism?

Although it's not deadly, it could cause other complications.

But back to my original question, without knowing the cause of death, what does reporting it before the guy has been dead 24 hours accomplish other than upsetting the family more?

Remembering his success

Irons was arguably the most dominant surfer of the early to mid 2000s.

In addition to his world titles, Irons had 19 world tour victories and has the distinction of being the only surfer to have won at every location on the tour.

But more significant than the statistics was his reputation as perhaps the only true rival nine-time World Champion Kelly Slater has ever known, and the two engaged in some of the most memorable title races in history.

Irons returned to the World Tour this year after a one-year hiatus. While his results had been up and down, a recent win at the Billabong Pro Tahiti in August signified a return to form in the kind of powerful, barrelling surf in which he made his reputation.
