Super Jet removing OE yamaha decals, on hood........

need some idea's. i am a little "gun shy" now. here is the deal....

i have an 03 SJ, that years back, i had removed all the stock decals, with no worries. i put on my shops logo, and all was good. well, last year, i wanted to re-do the decals on the hood, and when i peeled them off, i got the dreaded yamaha paint peel, right on down to the white glass. i did use a heat gun.

now, i have another hood, comming from tricky. unfortuneatly it still has the OE decals, and registration numbers, etc. on it, and i am now nervous in pulling them off, and ending up with another hood that looks like ass.

what has worked for you guys? i DO have one of those eraser deals that goes in a drill, but it seems like they scratch.

do i just use the heat gun again, and cross my fingers?

I just SLOWLY peeled the decals off, could never really get the decals off under the bond line glue is tuff stuff

I had no problem with scratches using an eraser wheel on the hull. I know if I would have used it on the hood it would have peeled the paint for sure. I would be extremely careful trying to peel decals on any Yamaha hood, no matter the method.

Agreed. In my opinion, if the paint has seen a lot of sun and use, the paint gets brittle and there's nothing you can do to not peel it.

My customer's 04 superjet hood just sluffed off the factory yamaha decals... including the paint behind them, with no attempt to peel them off. The paint just let go of the hood and off came the decals, presumably while riding.

If you get the hood to hot with your heat gun, it will peal the paint. Just warm it up, not to hot and slowly pull. Then take some adhesive remover, I like the "Aircraft" adhesive stuff and remove the residue.

The problem is factory Yamaha just paints right on top of the mold release used for the SMC hood...
You think they could of done some kind of a "prep" job before painting, but hey, they dont care what happens to your paint years down the road.

I usually use a heat gun but have used that 3M wheel with success on real hard to get off decals. The trick is to keep it spinning @ 2500 rpm. Any faster and Ive one blow apart. Any slower and they just make the decal all gooeyish and kinda clog, but live and learn.

The wheel would not be pulling very hard on the paint compared to heat, but thats your call Zig. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

eraser drill will work great but you need to keep the speed down... I used one and it scratched the hell out of one side, then I turned the drill down and the stickers came off perfect with no scratching..

i have peel litterally 100's of decals over the years. it was not until last year i had this problem with my SJ hood, and then i see this is NOT an uncommon problem on the yamaha hoods.

i just don't want to have it happen again. i am sure, i will be sweating as i am doing this......

worst case, i will need to blast, and paint a hood. ( which i would really rather NOT do)

well the hood arrived today.......

i let it sit in the sun, for a while, then "carefully" used the heat gun, with GOOD results. all decals came right off, no problems ( so i thought)

OK, so now i have the glue left on the hood. i have always just used acetone, with good results. i tried EVERY thing on this hood. nothing was cutting the glue. acetone was working the best, so i kept at it.

i got one side done, with some minor scratches, so i get out the buffer, and hit it with some compound, and then some polish. looks GREAT! on to side number two....

i am again useing the acetone, and all of a sudden the paint starts to lift, and sure enough falls right off the hood. i tell you, i was SO pissed.

i am DONE. tomorrow, it goes to the paint shop.....
