problem with compression on 66E

I have been trying to sell a GP800 66E engine for over a month now. One of the problems with the motor is that, even though it runs, one cylinder has low compression, (90/135). A visual on the piston showed minor scuffing but the cylinder was unmarked. The only thing I really found was that the ring wear was way overspec at +.045".

I purchased a new OEM Yamaha ring set, honed the cylinder and reassembled. Ring gap was now at .016" but Compression only came up from 90 to 100, not quite what I was hoping for.

**All testing on this engine has been with it sitting on my shop bench with no intake or exhaust, connected up to a battery, solenoid and starter.

I questioned proper ring seating on the hardened Nikacil Cylinders so I added some oil to each cylinder, swished it around as best I could and then turned the engine over by hand to remove as much of the oil as I could so the volume didn't affect my readings and took them again. This time I got 135/153, still not quite what i was looking for. If i let it sit overnight and come back to it without adding any more oil since, i now get consistant 125/150 readings.

I have been using the starter to turn the engine over for a minute at a time to see if it will seat but am unsure if it will without the heat of actually running. A minute at at time is all I dare try for fear of burning up the starter. The starter draws 28 amps and the outside housing gets warm to the touch at 1 minute. I have been leaving it several hours between sessions to cool down. (As I type this I realize I have been using synthetic rather than mineral oil for this seating process but i doubt that it has that much of an effect.?.?.?).

I believe i have another isssue, I just can't see what it is right now. What else is left? Rave Valves? I inspected them and found them to be in good working order except that the clearance in one is much more than the other. The cylinder with good compression has 0.045" clearance and the other is almost .075". Closing, (Lowering) the rave while cranking, increases the recorded pressure in the good cylinder but has no affect on the bad one.

When I finally spoke to the old owner about the problems he said that he had ruined a cylinder and had bought a used one to replace it with. It seemed to run fine for him other than hard starting so he never looked any deeper. Is there a chance he mixed up some of the components during the swap? Is there a difference between 800 and 800R parts? Port height? Piston Dimension?

So what do you guys think? What should I do next?

P.S. Am I sick for actually enjoying this little project.

I am not 100% on my following advise.
as far as I know you cant hone a nickasil cyl, so that is most likely your problem.
The rave valve doesnt seal well enough to effect compression.
It is possible the case pressure on the weak side is leaking.(not filling the combustion chamber well enough) Try leaving the opposite plug in while doing the comp check. Is there oil in the flywheel?, can you switch the reed valves to the opposite side and check again?
I think the 800r has rave valves and the 800 does not(remember not 100%)
On my newly NIckasil cylinders it took around 15 hours for the compression to come up to where it was supposed to be. (this I am 100% on)
Check the bore dimension and the piston dimensions. Maybe swap cylinders, see if the problem follows the cyl or stays with the piston or stays with the case side.
But for sure have Bud Light available! (you are Canadian)

The rave valve doesnt seal well enough to effect compression. That's what I thought as well

different base or head gasget ?? than the other side ? ... Interesting. I changed both base gaskets and the head gasket after I had the engine apart the first time.
I had a long discussion with a friend about Nikacil Cylinders and hardened rings that leads me to believe that breakin may be a long hard process and that without proper crosshatching it may never happen. Sure we were able to leave crosshatches but maybe it's just not near enough for oem rings.?.?.?

Are the rings hardened or anything else special on the Nikacil cylinders?

If I remember correctly it started around 135 and after 15ish hours it was around 185 and I checked it at various times and it was progressively getting higher.

CAn you get Molson Canadian where you live or do you have to smuggle it in?
You do know how excited I was when I saw a 30 pack of BUd for 17.00 in Havasu.

I stared at your response for a while before the snow cleared, lol. You can always tell who uses the fblue theme.

That's promising for an owner but not so much for a sales pitch. Whomever buys this engine needs to be aware of the history and be okay with it I guess. I just hate the idea of discounting the entire engine because of it. likely I will break it down and sell it off in components instead.

I haven't found it in any stores here yet but I really don't drink enough to warrant buying it if I did anyways. A couple cans found their way into my hands at Daytona and that was good enough. I was told that you can buy it in Florida at select stores due to the high population of snowbirds down there.

I had to order a piston for a 800 PV motor before and riva made me find a casting mark on the cylinder so they could order the right one...I guess each cylinder had slight bore differences. Maybe you have the wrong piston to cylinder combo affecting compression?

I know what you are talking about, the pistons are lettered A, B, C, D I think and the castings are numbered up to 12 or 16. I've read it somewhere before so I'll look it up and check that out this weekend.

I was wondering more about the raves matching due to the big clearance difference but I keep hearing that rave clearance isn't that important as long as it's not too close.

I think I'm over it now anyway. I picked up another project Monday night so I'm going to tear this engine down and part it out so different compression really won't matter and I only have to discount the one cylinder.
