Possible suggestions???

I have a SJ 701 with single carb.

When I start it up and ride it, great no problems.

However, after a few spills, it will start to bog so bad that there's not even enough power for me to get up and it sounds like its running on one cylinder (coming from someone still rather ignorant - so I can't say for sure that it's just running on one). If I let it drag me around for a while or if I take it to shore for a little while and leave the hood off, it's right back to normal.

The hood seal isn't that great, so I'm getting water in it, but not that much. But there is enough so that when I pull the hood, a lot of steam comes out. I would imagine that if the carb is pulling in a lot of steam, it may cause the problem.

Any suggestions? Does the steam sound like a possiblity or do you think something electronic may be getting damp that shouldn't?

You have to start with a new hood seal regardless. You may be getting moisture ingestion which may indeed kill a plug's ability to effectively spark or it could be something else.

Everything from here, though, starts with a new hood seal.

Start simple.

sounds like your pipe may be running hot as well. may want to run it for a while then pour some water on it, if it is scortching hot you need to adjust your jets. search the threads for the correct way to adjust.

There is already an electric bilge pump installed and I'm able to put my hand on the top of the pipe, so it's not all that hot.

I'll double check the hood vent tubes, but I'm pretty sure they drop in front of the carb.

I'll take a look to see what part of the engine is creating the steam.

Laugh all you want about the axe, but I don't have a single tree growing in my hull.
