650/X-2 Please help diagnos fuel delivery problem

I have a 1990 X2 that has been sitting for a while so I picked it up cheap but cant get started. Only am part is oil inj block off kit. I am mechanically inclined but this one has got me. Has Keihin 28mm carb. Ski only starts when fuel manually poured into top, then stalls out when its used up. I've: cleaned the carb- same problem, rebuilt carb- same problem, replaced the damn carb with another from a running X2-same problem, checked routing of every line- same problem, replaced all fuel, pulse, and return lines- same problem, pulled mani and inspected reeds and they're in excellent cond- same f***ing problem! Fuel IS pumping from tank, through lines, to carb and also from carb through return line back to tank! Nothing entering motor though. Am I overlooking something?

could be diaphram.. but if you installed a rebuild kit in the carb that would have been replaced.. and if you tried another carb that worked on another engine that would have fixed that... doesn't make any sense to happen on 2 carbs... unless you're not getting pulse, blow air through all lines(even if you replaced them)... i was fighting a similar issue when i got my 650sx back together.. ended up being tore diaphram, replaced that and it fired right off, until the used one i installed to replace it cracked after about 10mins of running.. waiting for new one to show up now...

i would personally blow air through everything, go through the carb again, blow everything out while doing so(just watch out so you don't blow any needed parts across your shop), and then double check your adjustment screws, i believe factory is 5/8 out from closed on high(top screw) and 1 out on low(bottom screw)... it SHOULD fire with these settings and the block off plate, though it will require adjusting once it's running... i have read some say you might need to rejet after block off, but it should still fire, though it may not run the best...

Blew through all the lines, even removed reed cages and blew through pulse line to see if there was anything at all in there....all was clear. Wont even sputter or try to run on its own. I'm at a loss on this one.

it's going to be something stupid... it always is... haha... you have fuel to the carb just not through it, it's either something clogged in both carbs or something not hooked up right... if you have access to another engine try both carbs on that set up and make sure it runs? fuel line coming from the pump is on the bottom barb of the carb and return is on top?

dump a bunch of gas down the carb. hold the throttle wide open. crank until it starts. keep it held wide open until it revs to the moon. slam your hand over the top of the carb , cutting off all air coming in, until it almost dies. this creates a huge vacuum in the carb and should pull gas in no matter what. just before it dies, take your hand away and let it rev back up. repeat that process a few times.

vapor lock maybe? i'd think it would come out of that after all the screwin around... idk man... i'm stuck on bad diaphragm, that doesn't answer why it wouldn't run on a different carb, but if it sat awhile the diaphragm could have dried out and cracked... 4 screws on the side of the carb holding the plate pull it off and make 100% sure it's good... if that aint it then I'm as lost as you...

It looked fine, I still rebuilt carb with a new diaphragm, and also used a completely different carb. All resulting in same original problem. Gonna start from scratch tomorrow again I guess

When I read rev to the moon I had a feeling you were going to say "and hold it there until it locks up"but this actually makes a lot of sense...

That's it!..I'm throwing a .40 cal round into this f***ing piece of poop. Now I hit the start button and the starter spins and that's all. This x2 must be uncomfortable being in a garage surrounded by Yamahas lol

Ok, been messing w this now for an hr. Will only start w fuel dumped into carb, and WILL stay running but only when constantly revved out. If I let idle drop, it dies and have to start process again. Anyone?

Sure, you could be losing pressure and fuel...............

A ski has to have 2 things to work. Fuel and Fire.......... Fuel being just that, Fuel, Fire being spark and correct timing and everything else with the ignition system. But without either, neither will work.........

Do you see an external fuel pump? the 28mm carb does not have a built in fuel pump like the 38/44mm carbs.......... Have you rebuilt the fuel pump also?

If you can get the ski to run by pouring fuel down the carb, then you are not getting "Fuel"

Just took the new rebuild kit out of the old carb and rebuilt the new carb and it runs fine! Since I just installed oil inj block off kit should I change any jets or settings on the carb? Stock jets still in, and running 5/8 out hi, 1 out low.

mine runs line a pig with factory settings with pre mix... it's super rich.. bit it doesn't want to run if i lean it out... i'm at 3200ft though, stick it in the water and see how it does, might be able to tune it out with the needle... glad to hear you got it running though, i had to pull my carb again(crap in the jet)..
