painting the ski, need advice

Location

Ok, im going to paint my 89 kawa 650. No i need some advice, im not worried about the looks really, i was just planning on sanding, priming, painting with a flat black then clear coating. What paints do yall recommend for this method? I didnt pay enough for the ski to go putting an expensive or time consuming paint job in to, just lookin to murder it out a little!:wiggle:

My local paint store sells a flat color paint with a hardener that's supposed to hold up pretty well, and enough for a ski would be well under $50. Come to think of it, you should be able to get enough decent automotive paint for under $50 too. It's for rat rods and other people that can't do decent body work.

I would talk to some of the body shop guys in your area. If you are going to do all the strip down work, u might as well have it look good. Strip it, prep it good and see if you can drop it off with them for a day and have them shoot it. You are doing all the busy work. Most body guys (no offense to any on the board) are lazy and just want to shoot paint and go home anyway...

There is an epoxy primer on the market that is very popular with the hotrod guys (this might be what you are talking about with the hardener) because it is completely sealed afterward, unlike regular primer that is porous. It is completely stable to UV and very durable as well. If you are looking for a flat finish, I'd recommend that. In fact that is what I plan on doing mine in. It's a PPG product called DP-40 (40 is the color, black, and there are others like gray and red but they would have a different suffix).
