paint remover rather then sanding????

has anyone tried using paint remover on their skis rather then sanding? I cant stand sanding and theres no way ill get the ski down to the bare hull.

Theres a gotta be about 10lbs+ worth of old paint and every little bit helps.

Will paint remover harm the SMC or Fiberglass?

Most paint strippers are safe for fiberglass, but only if its on the surface less then 8 hours. Not sure about compatibility with SMC, but I wouldnt risk it. Get a dustless orbit sander and a shop vac attachment, it cuts the dust to almost nothing, and takes it all out of the air. You'll of course have to block sand some areas, but thats a given. I would stay away from the stripper and stick with the tried and true.

we use this cool stuff called "aircraft remover" you can get it at an automotive paint store......it says not to use on glass, but we ignored that warning......it worked great because it eats up all the paint, but did not touch the gel coat.....the only few places that it got rough on were the spots where the gel coat had been worn or sanded through already.....but those spots just get a little touch of bondo and they're ready to go......also, get you a wire brush and brush the paint off as it bubbles.....keep it really wet with this stuff, puddles of the chemical work better than drier spots....when your done wash it real good with h2o and sand it with like 150 or 180......works like a champ and it pretty quick and painless.....

thats what i like to hear. i found some stuff that is made forremoving paint from fiberglass. Its made by Klean-Strip. Anyone ever use this stuff?

FX-6.9, is there any more specific name for "aircraft remover" any brand name or anything? i know the guy is gonna look at me liek i have 9 heads when i ask for aircraft remover

I believe it's made by Kleen Strip. I've seen it at AutoZone before.

I used stripper on many hoods w/ good results. There is a stripper for plastic avail at Advanced Auto I believe is where I got it. I have seen people use the aircraft stripper effectiveley as well on entire skis. Keefer did it PM him.

LOL holding up, that’s a good one. I have beaten the hell out of it and there is still a little paint left on it so all is good.:biggthumpup: I will never spend that much time and money painting a ski again. Rattle cans from now on.

I just went through all this. I tried all the paint remover systems out there and even some of the enviro safe type that require a mylar sheet to cover it then peel away. I ended up only using the stripper on the tight areas and nothing beats stripping paint with a high quality 6" palm sander with 150 grit.

The trick is in the quality of the 6" palm DA and 150 grit. Once you finally see a hint of the original inner layer move on. 150 grit of quite aggressive on a fast DA. 220 grit is better if your new to stripping with a DA.
