New Yamaha Stop/Start

Just got a brand spankin new Yamaha stop/start switch for my 90 SJ - I have had it with the non starts and the sudden quitting while I'm out riding. the old switch definitely had issues centered in the lanyard switch specifically. PITA.

Question: Anyone ever put some form of clear waterproof grease (kind of like the stuff they put into the Polaris electrical boxes (thats the brand I've seen, maybe they all do it?) into the switch area before they mount it on the bars? Thought maybe that would keep the water from intruding into the switches, but then again what a friggin slippery mess it would make to work on later on.

Any thoughts? And if it's done, what stuff did you use?

Thanks Frosty

Just to clarify, I'm talking about squirting the grease all around the outside of the switches in the box halves before I mount it up to the bar. I'm not going to go into the individual switches at all, the are brand new and "should" be perfect in function. I just thought maybe all the grease would keep water out and make the switch last longer (although I suppose the last one lasted 16 years, that's not bad).

I'm in fresh water too, so I don't think corrosion is as much an issue for me as for the salty guys.

you should be good in fresh water... 16 years... pretty good. did you try just opening the switch and cleaning off the connections?

I don't think I would worry about trying to put a grease barrier around the box/bars... i think that would just get messy.

Oh yeah, I've done the opening of the switch, cleaning contacts, etc...it worked for a while but the problem soon returned. I figure 16 years is a good life.

I'm leaning towards leaving the switch as is, free of grease. Would be a messy situation if I had to get in there and the switch box may not stay put very well either.

Btw for anyone who cares or has the same problem, Parker Yam appears to be the cheapest for the switch. And believe it or not, got it to me fairly quickly too.
