New Trailer Axel (Cheap Insurance)

Since I am going to be traveling quite a bit this summer I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and get a new set of bearings for my single ski trailer. I picked the trailer up on ebay for like $450 new in the box 3 years ago. Made in china of course. Well, take the hubs off and show them to the guy at the trailer store for replacements and they were meteric and a weird size at that (same with the spindle)......which translates into special order parts. The bearings alone would be like $8 each not including seals and races. SO long story short I decided to pick up a new axel (standard 1in spindles) so if I ever have trailer troubles I can go to walmart or bass pro shop or any place that sells trailer parts and get replacement stuff quickly.

I am glad I did look at the difference in construction between the two axels......the stock one is probably only rated to about 800lbs, was probably not even straight and you know it was flexing under load. The new axel can do well over 1500 lbs easy and is straight as an arrow. Picked up the axel w/ 1in spindles welded on ($100), new hubs w/ bearings, seals and lugs ($25 ea.), new hardware to mount the round tubing as opposed to the square, grease and bearing buddies for $180.

I am really glad I did this. If you guys are looking for a cheap trailer on ebay this is a reason the price is so low. If you are in the market, double check and pick one up with standard 1in spindles. If I had a bearing crap out on me on the road I would have been SOL for a while until I got a replacement. Who would have thunk it

If you're ever looking for bearing in a hurry, then Tractor Supply is a good place. Just thought I'd mention it.

Yeah, but I don't think they have meteric sizes. A standard 1in hub is easy to find parts for. Walmart even has them
