I've been on this forum for nearly a month now, but never introduced myself.
BTW I said guys because I am also saying hi for Scott McClendon. I don't know if he has a screen name on here yet, or has even posted, but he is the one who told me about the site and he always IM's me good deals in the classifieds.
My wife and I got into jet skis last summer with a couple of Polaris 3 seat couches. We ended up selling one 3 seater and buying a 2 seater. Scott (and his twin brother Todd) had stand ups almost 10 years ago (2 650SX's and 1 550). I had heard stories about them (ALL the stories were about breaking down). I had no interest in a stand-up.
We convinced Scott's wife to buy a 3 seat Polaris. Now that Scott was being dragged to the lake to ride with his wife (on the back of her ski) he was determined to find a ski. Stand-ups are kinda hard to find here. Scott bought a NICE 1991 SuperJet off Ebay in Atlanta. The irony: it had TX registration numbers.
It fired right up as soon as we charged the battery. He took the SN SJ out the first time and it immediately filled up with water. We could not find the leak and eventually decided it was a driveshaft seal on the hull. He installed a bilge pump that ran all the time and it kept enough water out of the hull that it was very rideable and fun.
I rode the SN SJ a couple of times. I sucked. Basically I could get up, ride straight, fall off, turn around (in the water), get up, ride back to shore. I would be EXHAUSTED at that point. It seemed like there were always 2 or 3 people in line to ride that SN SJ, so I spent very little time on it.
Fast forward to this year. A customer at my shop (we build 500hp Toyota MR2's) was cleaning out his garage and brought me a GIFT. It was a 1991 300SX that he could not get to start. So he was going to throw it way. Instead he gave it to me. A used plug cap (taken from a broken Polaris 750), a little time cleaning the carburetor and some time getting the rust off the starter brushes and it fired up. We took it to the lake in the back of my pickup (I had 2 couches on the trailer).
I know everyone here hates 300SX's, but I'm loyal to this one because it taught me to ride. If you can ride a 300SX, you can ride just about anything.
So I got better, good enough that I decided I needed a better ski. I started looking. All summer I saw only ONE round nose in a 300 mile radius for sale. So I bought it.
It was 100% stock when I got it. I added a dry pipe (bought from Jeff the Jammer off Ebay), scoop grate, and ride plate. The paint is flaking off the hood, and it has some sun fade, but if I keep it waxed it looks pretty good. A local 650SX owner asked me if I bought it brand new this summer. That felt good.
Oh yeah, about Scott. Well he sold my wife the 1991 SN SJ. We found the water leak to be a rubber exhaust/water coupler. I fixed it with the stock one off my 99 RN SJ. He bought a 1993 SN SJ with ride plate, scoop grate, factory B pipe, and flame arrestor. It's an awesome running/riding ski. He's working on a sport port cylinder. Soo it will be installed along with Group K ported cases, and an Ocean Pro head (beautiful red head that says 633 on it).
I've got plans for Christin's ski too. It already has a ride plate (I'm not sure what it is, it's flourescent yellow/green, slightly extended, says Yamaha on it and has little chines/fins on the bottom) and a top loader scoop grate. I bought a Riva Red pipe off a member here, I'll probably use Scott's porting template too.
