my wheel build

I figured I'd share my wheel build from this weekend. This isn't a how to but it should let you guys know that a regular guy can build his own wheels.

I had a local bike shop owner tell me once how important it was for a wheel to be built properly and how dangerous it was to ride on poorly built wheels. The intention was to get me to let them build my wheels for me but it just reinforced to me that I should build my own. I trust myself more than anyone else. I built a rear wheel out of used parts once before and used a low milage wheel off of a high end bike in the front, the front wheel fell apart and the rear is still great. This is my first time building a set.

  • I used the wheel building bible as my guide "the bicycle wheel" - http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Wheel-3rd-Jobst-Brandt/dp/0960723668
  • I don't have truing stand so I used a $30 dial indicator from harbor freight and the bike to true the wheel within .005 laterally and .01 radially. I don't think a truing stand would have done a better job.
  • I splurged on a tension gauge this time. I'm not sure it was totally needed though.
  • I learned that a good spoke wrench is money well spent.

parts list:
  • halo front track hub
  • shimano front disc hub converted to bolt on rear fixed gear w/ axle swap.
  • Phil Wood double butted spokes
  • DT Swiss brass nipples
  • Velocity Fusion non-machined rims.
~$300

So, $300 or so, is that just for the wheel parts or including tools? How much would a comparable built set cost to buy?
