My Stupid Question for Today: Steering Cable

Yup, I can't figure out the "correct" way to route the steering cable through the engine compartment. I've attempted searching the gallery for a engine compartment pic that might help me figure this out, no good. If any one can explain it, or has a pic, it would be greatly appreciated.

Down the handlepole, in front of the gas tank, to the right around the outside of the battery box, down the right side to the tube.

I have the gas tank out, which I think is part of my problem- the cable keeps "popping" up into open space, and I couldn't get it to lay flat.
