my first ride this year on my square, first thing off the trailr into the water, it popped a rear crank seal......:banghead::banghead::banghead:
my first ride totally sucked!!

that sucks ass. you sure you had it in right? 4 nubs facing out the back?
Also if you packed too much grease between the seals, the heat can cause the hydraulic pressure to pop out a seal. I have also read that using an aftermarket Kawi style small coupler can generate alot more heat thus causing the seal to pop out. A misaligned coupler could also cause this to happen. Good luck.

that sucks, i have had people help me put motors back together, and then looked at it after the cases are torqued, and found the seals on the wrong ends, that sucks but hopefully you cought it in time

found seals on wrong ends?? i didn't follow that one, and seals were put in with the outer edge lip to the inside.kawirider00 said:
It is easy to get them mixed up and installed either on the wrong end of the crank or in backwards. I always make sure and mark outside edge of the old seals when I pull them out and tie the two rear seals together to help me remember the exact order when installing new ones. Like sfl said, 4 nubs out on the rear seal. If they were not in wrong then heat and pressure probably got you. Did you use alot of grease?

I didn't think you could mess up the seals, they only go in 1 way when I do it.
the rear seals are 2 big seals and the front one is one small seal. pretty hard to mess that up.

I put one in flipped the wrong direction and it popped out... my stupidity, I had the manual

ouch....i was kind of thinking they only went in 1 way, are the inner and outer seals the same? it's been a while since i put that thing togather...i don't remember. i didn't think that they would fit in spun back wards???Mark44 said:
no grease, but i did put hondabond 4 on the lip of the seal that sets in the groove
I always put just a little marine grease on the lip of the seals that contacts the crankshaft. Just enough to give it a little lube instead of going together dry. I have never had any problems and have some that have been in for 6 years or longer on engines I have assembled.

just took the motor out, the seal with the nubs was on the inside, i'm not sure how the other one even fit in there with it like that??? the nubs stick out over the next groove.....lesson learned
