Hi,
What would be the best fiberclass cloth/mat for molding a hull from scratch?
Since there is lots of different fiberglass types, I need help choosing. (Weaves, density, ...)

I am planning on using vinylester resin and my plug will be made of wood.

Thank for your help

This is a scaled down version of what you are trying to do. Same process built thicker.

A lot of work goes into a plug. Rather than scratch, might I suggest modifying an existing ski that is close to the size and shape you want yours to be.

You mold should be twice as tick as your part, give or take. If you decide your part is going to be 3 layers of 1208, your mold should be around 6 layers.

If shrinkage isn't a major concern, you can save a few bucks on the mold by using low profile poly resin over vinyl ester.

I prefer 1208 for just about everything, but I use just about everything as needed. a layer a 3/4oz chop can be a good 1st layer to ensure you don't get any air between the gelcoat and the glass causing the gelcoat to crack. After that, you can use anything. Lighter fabrics are more pliable. You might start with a layer of 3/4, then a layer of 1-1/2 or 1208, then bulk it up with some 24oz cloth.

As for the part, I can't say. I haven't build a hull. It also matters if you are going to vacuum it and if you are using core materials. Hopefully someone can chime in, but most of the hull builders consider their layup proprietary and will not share that information readily.

I'm looking in modifing my current ski this winter and I'm looking for guidance/direction oh what I should do. Any help or articles you guys may know of would be awesome. I know fiberglass work I just have never added or subtracted from a ski.

Read all the existing build threads that you can. After you have some base knowledge and ideas, you can start a build thread and be more specific in your goals.

I like what I call the "on the part method". Its a method I made up that has worked for me in numerous past projects to keep the weight down. I started a thread about it using the name as the thread title in which I used the method to modify an airbox for my X2. It works on anything that you can access both sides of the part. It's a little more expensive because it requires the materials to build a mold but I have found it to have a better end result.

Here is the thread... http://www.x-h2o.com/index.php?threads/the-on-the-part-method.162922/

Sounds good and thank you.
I have an idea of what I want to do. I have a Kawasaki sxi 750 bored out to a 770 and I think I want to chop the nose as close as I can to where my poles at but I also want to take about a foot off the back too. So instead of it being seven foot it'll be about 5 foot long. I'll be sure to read that later tonight or tomorrow morning when I get home.

There are numerous threads where people have rockered and shortened their skis. Spend some time looking over several of them before you make your first cut.

You can also consider selling your SXI before you cut it and use that money to buy a RTR aftermarket hull. No matter how good of a job you do on the SXI, it will be almost worthless chopped up into a surf ski. They generally don't resell well. Most people looking for something like that want a superjet. I'm not being a nay-sayer. If you want to do it, then you should. Just make sure you know all of your options before you make a decision.

Sounds good I appreciate it. Yeah I'm looking into all my options. Before I make any decisions. What is an RTR?
I would love to buy and aftermarket hull I just don't know if I can afford it.
