well i pulled the pump off of my 95 waveblaster today and the grease on the tip of the driveshaft smelled so burnt it stunk up my whole garage. I just purchased this ski last season. what could have caused the grease to overheat like that. and is there any tips to getting it out and replacing it with new stuff.

All grease/gear oil stinks up the garage. It's just the nature of the nasty crap. However, if you really believe that it's burnt, you may want to check the alignment between engine, midshaft, and pump. Bad alignment would warm things up.

Speaking of midshaft grease (sorry, don't want to jack your thread here) Yamaha says to put about 8cc of grease inside the midshaft. Does centripetal force keep it spread evenly, to keep the splines greased? It takes about 1 cc to actually grease the splines, so I'm guessing the other 7 cc just sits there getting spun around evenly..?

With such a small diameter I wouldn't think there would be much force to spread it evenly. That waterproof grease is pretty thick.

the pump assembly turns fine. I would have to pull the engine to see how the mid shaft is spinning. My guess is that it is just very old grease because the pump and impeller look as if they havent been touched since the factory in 95

Even with perfect alignment, every spline end/ midshaft will have a weird "burnt" grease smell. It's the nature of the beast. Even with synthetic grease it smells the same. I wouldn't panic unless things are worn (spline end/deep grooved o-ring surface). Clean,re-grease,re-assemble....go ride.

yeah there insnt any werid wear on the shaft. i will just throw it back together after changing out the grease. I will be swapping over my solas concord to the wb from my superjet and getting a hooker.

Make sure that the inside of the short shaft and drive shaft splines are perfectly clean. Also push a rag through the bulkhead before reassembly, sand tends to collect there. I have seen splines ruined because someone got sand on them when they changed a prop. The short shaft has a lot of room for grease, I fill mine nearly half full.
