Super Jet Midshaft bearings ok?

How do i know if the midshaft bearings are shot and needs replacing?

The motor is put so i might as well check this.

Pretty simple, really. Just pull it from the hull, if it spins smoothly and isn't any play in it, you are good to go. I've taken one out of a squarenose one time where the shaft pulled completely out with minimal effort with the bearings disintegrated in the housing. If it's old, it'll probably need to be rebuilt.
 
Here is another important reason to remove the midshaft assembly while the engine is out: the 2 o rings inside the shaft should be replaced occasionally. They wear, then water enters the spline area, the grease washes out, then the splines of the drive shaft as well as the midshaft wear out- that gets expensive. The m/s housing bearing is a commonly available 6205- sealed- not expensive. The picture shows the location of the o rings inside the shaft.P1020896.JPG
