Other Mid shaft play.... Need rebuild?

I have my motor out and just noticed that my mid shaft has play up and down. Is that normal? I don't remember.... The bearings are smooth when I spin it.

No it should be tight. Mine were so bad water leaked in. Itll start causing a gnarly vibration. New bearings and seals are like 30 or 40 bucks you should do it now while the motors out

$15 for bearings/seals at a local bearing shop and maybe an hour of time, just rebuild it to be sure. Make sure the splines are good both inside and on the driveshaft side.

Assuming I need to get the coupler off and find a press? How do you get the coupler off?

Either with an old driveshaft or put the mid in a vise

Matt is correct, I do it both ways just depending on how I am feeling. I have also pressed it out with the coupler still on but its easier with it off. Mine was doing the same thing but come to find out the bearings were installed incorrectly as well

Do replace the 2 o rings inside the midshaft, they'll become a bit flat with age. If water leaks past them, it will wash away the grease and both driveshaft and midshaft will (!) strip on short order.
