I have a Specialized Hardrock, nothing to too fancy and its about 4 years old, but im going to be biking around town more this summer and my seat kills my a$$ after a couple mile ride. In the past I havent rode alot, consistently so is it something you get use to or should I look for a better seat? What are some seats I should try out? My town is a huge mtn bike and road bike place so we have a lot of bike shops to check out. Just checkin here first so I can narrow my search.

Nothing beat a Selle Italia Flite Gel!!!!!!!!!!!!!! been using them for years.......
no matter what seat you have, the first couple of rides (If you have not ridden in a while) are really tough...........

This is a good knockoff of the Flite Gel

seems like smaller the better? Mine is still pretty wide in the rear, but im gonna give it a few more long rides and see if I still hurt the next day. I like the open center design, but doesnt seem to hurt too much there.

It is a good idea to have either a "nut hole" or some sort of relief in the important area of the seat.

However, even with a good seat, your butt will be a bit sore for a bit. Get back on, grit your teeth, and deal with the pain for a couple days. If it doesn't get better after a couple days, I'd say you need a different seat.

It does seem strange that you get sore after only a couple miles. It should take more than that unless the seat really just plain sucks.

Bigger is not better. Neither is gel. I've tried (for a very short while) a couple, gel seats and although softer at first, I got butt burn from them.

EDIT: I can't comment on Big Kahuna's gel recommendations. They may be better. I was referring to the bigger "ultra-glide" sized gel seats. I used them on my stationary bike a few years ago. The ones Big Kahuna recommended may be a decent option, especially the knock-off as long as it is shaped properly.

The most important part is that your weight rests on the proper areas of the seat. Unfortunately, sitting on a seat mounted to a bike at the store only gives you a general idea. You don't really find out until you ride.

I have a race saddle that looks like it would be uncomfortable, but the fit is right and I wear bike shorts in addition which helps some as well.

I'll still get sore after 4-5 hours in the saddle, but I figure that is good enough for me.

having the seat adjusted properly will make a bad seat into a good seat.

too much tilt down and your ass hurts, to much back and your nuts hurt..........

You guys don't have a clue if you don't have a power king.

Yes I actually went on a bike ride with this baby all I had to do was WD40 the hell out of it straighten the bars out fill the dry rotted tires with air. I also took off the light because it was in the way of the 12 can cooler that fits real nice on the front rack. I also took the horn off because the rubber bulb was dry rotted off but my plans are to replace that.

This baby also has three speeds all internal in the rear hub and work quite well.

fyi, been riding the bike a lot this summer and no real probs with the seat anymore.

How many days a week do you ride? How long are your trips?

I just started back up this week. First trip out I had a flat tire in 3 miles, then it started raining, and the patch didn't hold super well because of where the puncture was located. I threw a new tube back in the tire after it went flat again after 5 miles, then I got lost. My planned 10 mile trip turned into 16 miles in the rain. :bs2:

What! What!
This is the one I have on my Palomino. I don't think they make this one anymore, but this is the style and profile that I prefer. It is a road seat, but I always run the road seats on my MTBs.

Narrow
Center groove
Drop tip
Wishbone shaped back

I agree with Kahuna that the adjustment is critical.

Saki, I agree with you about the Bontrager. That is the saddle that came on my Palomino when I bought it, and I would not recommend it.
