Custom/Hybrid LiFePO4 vs ETX9

While battery shopping, I started to wonder about something:

A lot of you are running the ETX9 with no problems, even with TL.

The specs for the ETX9 are 120cca and 8ah. Why when someone goes to a LiFePO4 battery like the Shorai or Ballistic do they go for a much higher rated battery? Simply because there isn't much weight penalty with such and "upgrade"?

For instance, the Ballistic 12 cell, which seems to be the most commonly run on here, is rated at 410cca and 20ah, basically a direct swap for a full sized battery. The 8 cell is 275cca and 15ah. The 4 cell is 135cca and 8ah.

The ETX9 (120cca) is about $60-70 shipped while the 4 cell Ballistic (135cca) can be had for $90-100 shipped. ~$30 upgrade for a battery that is less than a lb with similar specs.

So, are the specs supplied by either Deka or Ballistic actually different? Is the way the power is available actually different? Why isn't anyone running the 4 cell, or is someone?

I NEED a smaller battery because of fitment issues, but an ETX9 will work for me. I was seriously looking at a Ballistic 8 cell for my pump gas SXR engine running a charging AL flywheel, Advent ignition, and rule 500.

I just bought an ETX9 for my superjet, DASA 850pv with Power Factor... I've heard good things... hopefully it has enough CCA's for the fall riding we do here... air temps in the 30's/40's and water temps in the 40s/50's.

I just purchased the ballistic to replace the YTX20 that has 410cca. THIS thing is TINY. 2.5lbs. 80% lighter than a stock 17lb ytx20. static it only loses 10% of its charge over a year. you could take your spark plugs out. turn the starter motor and backflip on flat water with just a starter motor. i have a few customers that run them in woods bikes and heard nothing but good things so i pulled the trigger. only downfall so far is retail of $189.00.

People are very happy with them so far, only a few issues that have been resolved. The weight is great, but the size is really what I'm after. Even an ETX9 is going to be a challenge to mount in my ski.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on an 8 cell today unless someone talks me out of it.

Just make your own tray. Couple flat pieces of steel some small diameter all-thread. And some hydro-turf to keep it from being "rigid"
