I've got a 3 year old lap top and the charger is on the fritz. I had a break in the line a while back and soldered it and shrink wrapped it and its worked fine for about 4 months, but now i'm hearing it arc some where in the charger so i think i am going to stop using it. I bought a charger off woot a month ago, and woot claimed it would work on my HP dv 4000, but the specs don't match. My battery calls for 18.5 V 3.5A ( 65 W) and the charger's out put is 19 V 4.74 A (90 W). I would have assumed woot was jsut mistaken about this charger working for my laptop, but several other sites have the same specs on replacement chargers for my laptop. My question is do laptops have some sort of current limter? If it does would the huge difference in current, cause it to dissipate a ton of heat, and eventually burn up?

That is one of HP's standard chargers, it will work just fine. HP has had 65, 90, 120, 135, 150W chargers over the years and they are all pretty much interchangeable, the smaller ones just take longer and some of the bigger ones are for the larger laptops/docking stations.

My experience with Dell laptops is that chargers that don't have enough juice won't run a laptop or they will say can't run at full speed.
Too much is fine. That's just what it is capable of delivering. It won't force the extra watts into the laptop. The extra half a volt is nothing to worry about either.

Did the charger plug actually fit into the laptop? I had the same thing happen recently. I bought the 90w charger because it said it would fit, but the plug was too large for the laptop. I ended up having to order the 65w from HP.
HP changed plugs about 2 years ago to a larger plug. I have a short adapter that i use to go from the new to the old style at work, you can buy them for like $10. (I have tons of HP laptops at work, both new and old style plugs)

Ebay buy a kenington universal charger for $20 bucks. It works great i have three of them ( i run a side business of fixing computers) if you want to know who sells them let me know i will show you. And if you need one i can sell you one.
I completely forgot about this thread, I just had to order a new one for the old laptop....I got it off E-bay, for 12.99 shipped, so we will see if it actually works
